Push it to the limit

Víctor E Sánchez, an independent journalist in Cuba, has put forth a brilliant idea on how to take advantage of the latest ruse perpetrated on the Cuban people and the world by the Castro regime with the help of Spain and the Catholic Church. While the regime and its enablers may view their latest ploy as a victory for the dictatorship and a blow to the dissident movement, the opposition in Cuba, according to Sánchez, has a golden opportunity to turn this around.

In an editorial titled Subir la Parada (Push it to the limit), the independent journalist puts forth a proposal to use the machinations of the regime and its allies to their advantage. Of course, this will only work if the entire opposition movement in and out of Cuba works together towards the same goal. And yes… that is a huge “if.”

Santiago, Cuba, July 9, 2010 – (www.aplopress.com) The Cuban opposition has a golden opportunity. More than just an opportunity, they should seize the moment and make the Cuban government pay the corresponding political price for using political prisoners, “the products of repression,” to their international advantage.

The efforts and sacrifices of the Cuban opposition are being taken advantage of by their own political adversaries who left them out of their own struggle. Nonetheless, this situation can be reversed to their favor, but the opposition must push it to the limit.

The prisoner releases are the best argument that no legal reason existed for their imprisonment, so all political prisoners should be released based on the same legal precedent. If the mediations conducted by the Catholic Church and the Spanish government to achieve the release of prisoners are to be consistent, they must also advocate for the ones that remained imprisoned and also advocate that no other Cuban be imprisoned for the same reasons.

Now, the opposition should be the ones that set the guidelines, taking advantage of the moment and switch over to offense. The time has come for a real political opposition to assume its role, not an opposition of denouncements, articles and declarations. It is not that opinion articles do not create vital schools of thought, but that a line must be drawn between foundational theory and political leadership, which are both necessary things, but from very different players.

If things are pushed to the limit, as I mentioned earlier, and the opposition increases its political activism, it could gain incalculable ground. Ground that would be very difficult for the Cuban government to regain without encountering great contradictions; release some and imprison others for the same reasons. The regime must be forced to manifest itself, to behave as it has always behaved, and if it does otherwise it would be a sign of weakness and the opposition can then hit them where it hurts at those moments.

The opposition is well aware of what benefits the Cuban government and its allies are expecting to pull off from this political interplay. When I say opposition, I am referring to those both inside and outside that have publicly demonstrated themselves to be its leaders. They are the ones with the responsibility to salvage this moment in history, face the risks demanded by political struggle and make the repression obvious to ensure that the Cuban government pays the consequences if it insists on continuing to violate the liberty of the citizens.

How could the Castro regime protect its deteriorated image if it were to mount another wave of repression like the one in 2003? Before allowing uncertainty to take hold, the essential thing to do would be to develop a real political proselytism that gets the population involved. It is essential that an imperative be undertaken for the presentation of public proposals for a national program according to international standards. That would be extremely important in these moments when the eyes of the world are on the political events taking place in Cuba.

If the ability to engender support is lost from this apparent political victory over the Cuban regime, the cost would be too high. The players that maintain our political struggles active would soon disappear like Guillermo Fariñas’ hunger strike, the marches by the Ladies in White, and the existence of an innumerable amount of internationally renowned political prisoners

If the Cuban government is able to recuperate from this situation, it will be able to achieve its purpose: that the EU’s Common Position is suspended and the US would authorize American tourism to the island. If this happens, then there will be no other emotionally important moment for the opposition until it is publicly announced that one of its patriarchs, be it Fidel or Raul, has forever left our lives.
