Ros-Lehtinen says Marlins manager Guillen should meet with victims of ‘Castro’s tyranny’

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) said on Tuesday that she supports the decision by the Miami Marlins to suspend Manager Ozzie Guillen for five games for saying he admires Fidel Castro. But the Cuban-born congresswoman said Guillen should do more to understand why his comments hurt Cuban-Americans, including meeting with them.

“In addition to his apology, Guillen should meet with the many victims of Castro’s tyranny who live in our community to learn about the horrors of Castro and his regime, and he should make a donation to a group that helps the families of political prisoners in Castro’s gulags,” Ros-Lehtinen said.

Ros-Lehtinen’s comments came on the same day Guillen apologized for saying, “I love Fidel Castro” and that he admired Castro for remaining in power for so long. Guillen, a Venezuelan who has also said he supports Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, was forced to retreat from his Castro comments as Cuban-Americans in and around Miami immediately threatened to boycott the Marlins.

Ros-Lehtinen said Guillen’s comments showed a “complete disregard for the horrific suffering inflicted upon Cubans by the Castro regime.”

“There is nothing to respect about this evil dictatorship,” she said. “People are free to express their opinions but they should at least have some awareness about the impact of their reckless statements.

“Expressing respect for Fidel Castro is idiotic, insensitive and hateful,” she added.

  1. This is giving the jackass too much credit. Don’t waste anybody’s time on trying to “enlighten” him. Let the Venezuelans deal with him if they like, but we have better things to do. Just send the right message to those really responsible: the Marlins.
