On Flaky Logic and Neocolonialist Images

Jeff Flake apparently knows nothing about the tourist tsunami that has been flooding Castrolandia for the past few years.  Girls-Gone-Wild co-eds and drunken frat boys have been there for quite a while, enjoying la vida loca, while nothing changes for the Cuban people.

The offensive photo above, a nauseating example of neocolonialist kitsch, is proof positive of Flake’s flaky logic.

The second item missing from Flake’s field of vision is that other see-saw tsunami: the Cuban “exiles” who travel back and forth, and flood the island with dollars and merchandise.

Suggested meditation: contemplate the photo above.  Soak up the imagery.  Then, imagine this:  a travel agency advertisement from 1943, showing a group of very happy Canadian and American tourists in a Volkswagen convertible, with the Brandenburg gate in the background, fully decked out in Nazi regalia.   Yeah.  Visualize that.

  1. As Dr. Eire notes, its a veritable tourist tsunami going to Cuba. And the worst part about it is that there is absolutely nothing educational or democracy edifying about these tours to Cuba. And even worst still, its become so blatant that there is not even an attempt to try and hide it anymore. As proof, listen to this, years ago, I went to Istanbul, Turkey and I used the services of Gate1Travel [http://www.gate1travel.com/]. Gate1travel is precisely what its name implies, a travel agency. It specializes in arranging low cost international travel tours for single people or groups.

Since using their services, this agency has continued to send me brochures of other “exciting” international trips everywhere from Asia to Europe and from Africa to the Americas. Well, guess what? In their latest brochure, they are breathlessly announcing their latest line of travel! Exciting trips to Cuba! Of course, the picture they employ shows crumbling buildings and 1950’s cars! Now, I ask myself, how does Gate1travel’s services qualify within the paramaters of Obama’s trips to Cuba? And why is this permitted? No need to answer. We all know the answer. Not only does the Obama administration not care about Cuba, but it is actively helping the tyranny to sustain itself by providing a lifeline.

  2. Part (repeat, PART) of the problem is that LOTS of Cubans are playing this game, and if they’re OK with it, well, do the math. Of course there’s also the eternal hypocrisy and double-standard that would NEVER approve of this for, say, apartheid South Africa, let alone Nazi Germany, but my point is our own house has too much glass siding.
