Cuban-American Members Of Congress Will Have Briefing Highlighting The Plight Of Heroic Women In Cuba By Hosting Berta Soler, Leader Of The Ladies In White, & Perennial Target Of The Castro Dictatorship’s Wanton Abuses Against The Cuban People

“Berta has been a perennial target of the Castro state security apparatus and her life in Cuba is a perfect example of what all pro democracy activists face when they dare stand up for their human rights and dignity,” says Ileana

Washington, DC – The Cuban American Members of Congress Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Albio Sires (D-NJ), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Joe Garcia (D-FL) will host a briefing with Berta Soler, the courageous leader of the Ladies in White in Cuba. The Ladies in White and all of the brave pro democracy activists in Cuba are engaged in a daily struggle against tyranny and a brutal military dictatorship that stops at nothing to hold on to power and squash any and all dissent against its 50 plus year dictatorship.  This important briefing will be held this Friday, April 26th at 8:30 am in room 2200 of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, DC. Press is invited and encouraged to attend to hear the words of Berta and her thoughts on the tragic circumstances that the Cuban people have been forced to endure for over 50 years.

Berta Soler and Las Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White) are a thorn on the side of the Castro regime simply because they refuse to be silent against the constant repression and abuse the Cuban people suffer at the hands of the aging and brutal despots. The Ladies in White, the wives, mothers, aunts, and sisters of political prisoners, received the Sakharov Prize Freedom of Thought, the European Parliament’s top human rights award and they are considered one of the most important human rights groups inside Cuba.

Said Ros-Lehtinen, “I urge my colleagues to join Mario, Albio, Joe and me as we welcome this very courageous woman and hear her recount the oppression and outright abuses committed by the Castro brothers and their cowardly thugs. Berta has been a perennial target of the Castro state security apparatus and her life in Cuba is a perfect example of what all pro democracy activists face when they dare stand up for their human rights and dignity.”
