Introduction by Michael Z. Williamson
Edition: 1

A view of day-to-day life at the front at Al Qa’im, Iraq, in 2007, and images from a very special ceremony at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany. The purpose of the book is to show some of the time other than combat, so that the reader can gain a better understanding of life at the front, and part of the process for the wounded, that is not news and seldom seen. To quote from the preface: “This is not a book about combat, or combat photography. While every combat reporter wants that one-in-a-million shot or video snippet, such images can only show a few seconds out of what can seem an eternity. Blood sells, and the 99 percent of time that is routine or even boring is not news. It is, however, real. It is the reality of life under arms that 99-plus percent of your time is tedium; it is boredom; it is paperwork; and, it is the mundanity of life and living. The less than one percent that is stark raving insanity and terror may be news, but it is not life at the front. My goal for this book, as with the first, is to share with you some small bit of that 99 percent. It is a chance to share with you some of the sights that were a small part of my life, and a large part of the lives of our troops, at a given point in space and time. It is a way to share the beauty that is there if you look at things the right way, and the everyday facets of life that elude most eyes and consequently never shared. ” It is a chance to show some of the beauty, humor, and resilience that is life in a combat zone and the troops who end up there. It will, I hope, make you laugh, make you cry, and maybe think a bit. For those who have seen the face of war, I hope you will write in the sections of the pages I’ve left blank your memories of your war, to share with family, friends, and others. This builds on my first book, A Different View: Travels with Team Easy, Iraq 2007 and represents the second part of that trip.
