The Embargo for Dummiesİ

Here's a quickie for the "lift the embargo" crowd:

The prime directive of Fidel Castro's revolution was to rid Cuba of ALL American interests. He wanted the big bad imperialist's businesses out of the island, and he achieved this by nationalizing everything.

Well, Fidel got what he wanted. All Americans and their businesses and corporations are gone. Have been for 45 years. So why, now, decry the evils of the American embargo agaisnt Cuba? Isn't that what Fidel wanted?

Be careful what you wish for.

They cry about the embargo all the time... What excuses would they have left if we lifted it? And isn't communism supposed to work without interference from capitalist countries like the U.S.?

The problem with communism and socialism is simple: there is no incentive to progress. The individual needs to have something tangible for his effort as working for the collective is not in man's nature.

Certainly you must not be thinking of Cuban citizens while writing this, or am I mistaken? They don't deserve Fidel. What's up with embargoes, let poor people die like in Iraq? Bah.

tanj,

The lifting of the embargo will benefit no one but Fidel Castro. The average Cuban citizen cannot afford basic basic needs much less anything sold for dollars. At present, castro's regime trades with almost every one else in the world and his populace is still living in squallor. So, in response to your comment, it is quite obvious its Castro's regime that lets people die, not the embargo by the US.

THANK YOU!!! That's all I can say...I don't understand why others can't see this as clearly as you've just stated this.
I prepared a post yesterday, which I will be placing on my blog tomorrow about this same subject...Also lifting the embargo will only give Fidel an extra boost of power that he doesn't need or deserve....I can already see his smug face claiming that he got one over on the United States....He'll use it to his own advantage, just as you said!
