Just in time for his Coral Gables visit
The Bush administration may reduce the amount of money allowed to be sent to families in Cuba.
I'm all for it.

Val, can you explain why you suport this idea?
So the families in Cuba will realize that the only reason they're staying alive is because of the money from the States and not because of the laregess of the revolucion?

Patrick,
Cubans send moneyto Cuba to the tune of 1 billion a year. One billion. That's a heck of a lot of money. A good portion of that money goes to the government one way or another.
Now, Im totally torn on this issue. How can I, in good conscience, propose that Cubans abroad not send money to their families? If there is one thing Cubans treasure above all else, and which you can tell by my personal writings, is family. However, there are many that prostitute the system. Some send money merely to have family members bribe and obtain certain percs, such as moving from one residence to say another residence on the beach, with the pretext of being in that home once Castro and his regime are gone. They call this permutando, permutating.
The embargo does not prevent the shipment of food items and medicines to the island and some, of course, take great advantage of this. But there are others that only want dollars since it is truly the currency of value in Cuba. yet the more money that goe sto Cuba, the more money the regime has access to, and thus, these allowances help defeat the purpose of the embrago.
