BlogCuba - Intro

When I first asked my fellow bloggers if they wanted to participate in this BlogCuba the reaction was mostly "Yes. I'd love to be a part of it, but what am I going to write about? I don't know much about Cuba." I told them not to worry, they would think of something.

And they did. Boy, did they ever. I am humbled by the quality of writings they have sent in. There's a bit of everything, from personal accounts of a Cuban girl one blogger had a crush on when he was a kid to a major fisking Castro and his apologists.

Truly excellent stuff. I'll be posting the entries throughout the day.

Major thanks to each one of the participants. You guys really went all out. Gracias.

So...without further ado.....

If I had a blog, I'd offer something. But I do have an anecdote. One of the street people here in Austin says he was born in Cuba and came to the US around 1962. He doesn't speak any English. He clearly hated the snot out of Tio el Comandante, though, because he'd do these wonderful impersonations of the guy. He'd say: 'This is how Castro sees himself' and strike this magnificent statue pose. 'But this is what he is these days,' he'd follow with, and he'd age about sixty years by changes of posture, letting his face sag, holding out an imaginary cane. He became quite the convincing image of an old-unto-the-point-of-incontinence-and-debil-as-hell man.

Regime change in Cuba could be a simple matter of the sands running out in the hourglass. Too long in coming, maybe, and too late, but people living today can expect to see it.
