The Sound of Crickets Chirping

That's what you hear from the human rights community, the European Union, the Mainstream Media and those that laud the castro regime when something like this happens:

HAVANA, February 1 (www.cubanet.org) - Independent journalist José Antonio Fornaris was summoned by the Department of State Security last week and questioned for 90 minutes about 18 articles he had written and that were posted on the CubaNet Web site.

Fornaris said afterwards that two agents told him he was violating the law by writing articles for use abroad and that he was running the risk of imprisonment.

He also said they told him that if he received a visa from the U.S. Interests Section for emigration to the United States he would not receive an exit permit from the Cuban government unless he stopped his activity as an independent journalist.

Had this journalist been, say, covering the war in Iraq, we'd be barraged with the news stories and dismay and the calls for President Bush's head. "Oh my God!!! We're being oppressed! Freedom of speech is in peril!! A voice is being stifled!!!

But it's Cuba, where the almighty fidel reigns supreme and useful idiots fight for his teat.

It is all about money. The EU could not care less about human rights. Dollars will always trump human rights, unfortunately.

We also heard the crickets a few years ago after Biscet sent a letter to Coretta Scott King. Why doesnt the press or especially the black community get infuriated at the treatment of blacks in Cuba? Where's the congressional black caucus? Jesse Jackson? Maxine Waters?
An excerpt:
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, an American as well as a universal hero, made a
reality a Constitution of laws which, when applied, shined even more as they
benefited the human race for the honor and glory of God. The speech
pronounced by the Reverend King at the Lincoln Memorial " I Have a Dream ",
is today a reality. Immigrants such as Sammy Sosa and Duque Hernandez are
live examples of the American dream.

Cuba, a totalitarian society ruled by communism, rejected non-violent methods
of struggle, inciting the black community to obtain power through the use of
violence as they themselves had done in the past. As activists of the Lawton
Foundation for Human Rights, we dream that respect for life and liberty exist
in our country as we are opposed to the death penalty, abortion, and the
current arbitrary laws of the Cuban Penal Code which violate the universal
rights of man. We wish these benefits to be enjoyed by the whole world for we
do not defend a particular race but, the entire human race because we are
children of the living God. It is He who made us, and not we ourselves (Psalm
100:3 ), God, who shows no partiality...(Deuteronomy 10:17-18.)

In our country, discrimination exists against the black race which, together
with the mestizo, represent around 70% of the population. They have a very
low political, economic, and judicial representation in contrast to the
numerous prevailing black penal population. This situation is never publicly
manifested by the government but is a component of communism's subtle
politics of segregation. The following are examples of economic, political,
and social segregation that exist:
Inhabitants of the eastern section of the Island, most of whom are
black, were expelled from Havana and a current decree prohibits their freedom
of movement to and from the capital city.
- Foreigners invest in Cuba, enjoy the best hotels, beaches, and medical
assistance while Cubans cannot.
- The mass media manifests an open-anti-Semitism. The government is
openly partial towards the Arabs while it promotes contempt for the
Israelites.
- Religious schools are not permitted, forcing parents to send their
children to public schools where scientific atheism is taught (communism).
Those in the military cannot profess any religious belief.
- Children have no toys. These are sold in dollars in the government
stores while only 20% of the population has access to this foreign currency.
- Government dissent means the loss of your job, discontinuation of
middle and higher education, jail, and exile.

Thanks to our exile community, the Cuban people have not suffered ostracism,
or have been usurped and erased from the face of the earth by communism as is
the case of Tibet. The free and democratic world is apathetic towards our
people, ignoring their right to independence. Dr. King said: " If at present
I lived in a communist country I would also promote justice."

Cranky,

I'm afraid it's more than just dollars with the human rights groups, MSM, and EU. It seems these days that any opportunity these groups get to stick their collective finger in the eye of America, they will. Thus, because Castro is an enemy of America, he is a friend of them. Sickening...

I have read reports from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Reporters Without Borders and other human rights groups on Cuba, and they have all been quite critical of its repression, particularly the major crackdown that took place in 2003. So I am not sure why you seem to believe that the human rights community is apathetic about repression in Cuba.

Let me second what Tom said, and emphasize it further: the EU is a vile statist kleptocracy that is particularly dangerous because it mouths the language of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. The sooner it's gone, the better.

Por Cuba Democratica,Libre y Justa/Free Cuba Now!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We should keep fighting until Democracy,Freedom and Justice is restored in Cuba, but of course, without " the help" of Dictator Fidel, and his brother Raul, who are running the island as a personal property in a very destructive way for the nation. We must never dismay in our efforts to let the world know what is really going on inside the gallows in the prisons and the forced labor the political prisioners of concience face every day together with the lack of food and medical attention. We must never forget those sent to pysiquiatric wards to receive "electroshock therapy" because of their beliefs or just because they opposse the arbitrary regimen impossed upon them by the ruling tyranny. In Cuba, every day people are struggling to survive, because Castro's internal embargo upon civil life and human rights and not because the so-called "american embargo." Don't hesitate and speak out everytime you have the opportunity to do so for the future and sake of the cuban people who have no voice inside the captive island and much less access to the Internet to make themselves heard to the outside world. The Cuban People always is going to be grateful for our efforts and thats is our best reward. Sooner or later the Truth must prevail! A.H. (S.O.P.L.I.N) Sociedad de Opositores Por La Independencia Nacional
