I think you underestimate the survival instincts of the cancer that is totalitarianism. Communists and other such trash have been struggling and evolving since the beginning in France. Originally the Leftists in the French Parliament were the capitalists and the Right was made up of the landed aristocracy. After the French Revolution, the Left became populist and turned against anyone with money, except for the new aristocracy, who were busy cutting off everyone's heads, in the name of the people, of course.
From France the cancer spread to the rest of Europe and this populist socialism took different forms in Germany and Russia, as well as Britain
and America, though because of the more egalitarian societies there, found little support except among the spoiled children of wealthy parents. It was this brat class, along with opportunistic lowlifes and criminals, who were the core of the Leftists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and continues to be so today.
They have changed their slogans, their dress, and their methods many times, and continue to do so. They know that open rebellion gets them nowhere in an advanced society, and political rebellion gets them little in a free society, so they do what they can; they lie, cheat, and steal elections, and worm their way into every institution of society they can. They will use religion, atheism, science, superstition, whatever it takes, they only want to have complete dominion over the planet when it's done.
