CACHAO (Updated)
I have just met a living legend.
Israel 'Cachao" Lopez is here at Cuba Nostalgia, and Julio, Babalu's resident photographer, just photographed George and I with him.
How cool is that? I can't get over it...
UPDATE:
Here it is, by popular demand.

Here I am, on the last day of Cuba Nostalgia. As I was arriving at the booth, the great Israel "Cachao" Lopez was sitting on a bench between the two buildings that hold the exhibits. I shook the man's hand... [Read More]

This is great! Specially for cubans like us who live far from Miami. Cachao is indeed a cuban legend. Thanks for documenting this.

Hi, Amanda,
I just got home about an hour ago from my trip to Florida --yes, I flew and boy, are my arms (and everything else) tired!
An initial calculation shows that I took a grand total of 1,007 photographs during my three days at CubaNostalgia.
And as I assured you, I *will* be forwarding you some prints of the Cachao images, as well as a few others.
My wife gave me a quick lesson on "reducing" the size of the files. Hope I remember her explanation in the morning.
It was great meeting you formally and seeing so many of the other faces behind the names of Babalublog.com.
And by the way, the "abuelitos" dolls will be part of yet another post I have in preparation, with photographs ---my goodness, I hope Val has room for all the images I plan to send him over the next few weeks!
Stay well and keep on blogging!
Julio

Oh man, I knew I should have gone back on Sunday! Seriously, I had the great pleasure of hanging out at the Babalu booth Saturday afternoon. The whole experience moved me beyond belief, but watching people of all ages email fidel leaves me wordless. Their expressions the moment they realized this was real, they could say whatever they felt, no censorship. I was honored to meet Val’s parents, a very lovely couple. It's clear why Val is who he is. Maggie and Val, you two are beautiful. They welcomed me like family, gave me great food and drink. You have worked so hard to educate people about Cuba, the real Cuba, and that damned revolution. The bastard is going to die, and then there will be change. It's coming, I really believe it is. I hope soon, we'll be raising those glasses in a free, prosperous La Habana. Viva Cuba Libre.

By the way George, weren't you holding a Mojito when I last saw you Saturday? Remember that talk we had about the Irish? Hmmm, some weekend.
Posted by: Kathleen at May 24, 2005 02:27 AM
Kathleen, you are right. When you left on Saturday I had a mojito in my hand, and I have one in the picture with Cachao. Sunday was a very heavy mojito day; they appeared in my hand as though out of the ether. It was a dirty job but somebody had to do it. Cubans have nothing over the Irish when it comes to the consumption of adult beverages :-)
It was a pleasure meeting and speaking with you. You are a great friend to BabaluBlog and a fellow lover of freedom. My best to you and your family.
