Gulags: A Rant

(Be warned: foul language ahead.)

Somewhere in Cuba, there are prisoners of conscience, political prisoners, sitting in their excrement infested 3 foot by 6 foot completely enclosed cells rotting away for maybe owning a typewriter or for writing a poem or, far worse, for expressing their opinions.

They eat maggot filled slop maybe twice a day. Dont see the light of day and are tortured both physically and mentally in so many different ways that I, so far removed yet so read up on the subject, even have trouble imagining.

Some have their arms wrapped in refrigerator coils which are powered 24/7, rendering such pain that the use of their limbs is forever atrophied. Others have cables clamped to their testicles and the other ends connected to car batteries, destroying not only their bodies, but their manhood, or, if they be lucky enough to ever be released from their hell, their ability to create a family.

Others, yet still, in the darkness of their cells, lying there naked, are doused in powdery chemicals that irritate their skin, so much so that their entire bodies are bloody from their desperate attempts at scratching the incessant itching.

All are tortured mentally. Told daily that thier wives or sons or daughters have been arrested and lay in the same predicament as they. Your son, they say to them, the 12 year old, he is in prison with the general population. Es el buggarron de todos. Youre 12 year old boy is everyone's bitch.

They are prodded and poked. Beaten. Starved. Dehydrated. Bound. Gagged.

Some days they are led outside, completely naked and made to stand in line. One of the guard puts a piece of chewing gum on his bayonet and begins to poke the chest of the first one in line. After a few pokes the blade sneaks through the gum and begins to pierce the mans body, he winces from the pain and begins to step back. More poking, more stepping back. More poking, more stepping back until the men in line are crushed together, naked, dehumanized.

Some are lucky enough to be on the upper floors of their prison cell. Where when they defecate they dont have to worry about the shit falling from the cell above through the little hole in the slab above them. Some are unlucky enough to be on the ground floor, where the feces from the two or three other unfortunate souls above them flows through that little hole above and onto the cell's floor, covering it all, making it difficult to move. Difficult to breathe from the stench of accumulated waste.

That's what happens in the REAL GULAGS in Cuba. Where desperation and real torture and humiliation reign supreme. Where thousands upon thousands of men have endured that torture and humiliation for decades upon decades. Where thousands of men have died and the rest have been marked for life.

So dont come to me and talk to me about the "Gulag" and Guantanamo Bay. Dont come to me to convince me there's a "gulag" being run by the evil Americans. Dont come to me and and tell me the use of the word "gulag" is appropriate in reference to Gitmo.

Because there's no way in HELL that it is. Because the true gulag isnt just over the gottdamn fence of the Naval base, the true gottdamn gulags arent just found on the island of Cuba, scattered about from one tip of the crocodile to the other, filled with men and women who are truly tortured souls. No, the true gulag is the island of Cuba itself. Where it's not so much as how one is allowed to handle a holy book but to OWN one. To READ one. To BELIEVE in one.

Fuck you, Amnesty International. You have just spit upon the many who had hope in you. You have just spit upon those that supported you. You have just spit upon all of those that have died waiting for you.

Waiting for you, Amnesty International, in their very real Cuban fucking gulags.

I just copied this posting and sent it into the gulag. Tomorrow, it will be circulating underground, translated into Spanish, not to give them any news, because this is of general knowledge in Cuba, but to tell them that we are aware of their suffering and that we try to pry other people's eyes open onto their disgrace and onto the true nature of the beast that is been choking them for the last 46 years.
I also sent it to a few newspapers, when the guy on charge of e-mails is going to read it and maybe discard it, but it will be in his memory. You guessed it right, I also sent it to all the newspapers in Cuba. So the guy in charge of e-mails tell his family tonight and the contents of this posting sip their way well into the woodwork of what is left of Cuban society.
Thanks Val, for all you do.

Great rant. Amnesty International is a hypocritical organization with an openly leftist agenda. If they ever showed even the slightest fairness in covering the abuses in Cuba it was a a few years ago when the 75 were imprisoned. That, however, was nothing more than a token gesture done because they had to. If they had ignored those arrests they could not have maintained that vaunted (pretense of) objectivity they so carefully cultivate among the liberal/leftist and media elites. I defy any representative of Amnesty Internation to show me how they have been at the forefront of exposing the political prisons and the decades of abuse and violations of human rights in Cuba. Last time I checked there were about 25 results from a search on "Cuba." I see more locally here than I ever have from Amnesty.

So, where are you Amnesty? When are you going to talk about the real gulags in Cuba? When are you going to run your expose? Or do you hate the US so much that making castro look bad is not feasible for you?

Read the comment below I posted on another Gulag post here at Babalu. Nothing has changed in twenty or so years...

Many years ago (1986 or 87) I was attending the New Music Seminar in New York City. One of the seminars being held for the attendees was sponsored and produced by Amnesty International. Now remember that this was during the Reagan years and we were (as we are today) the evil, evil influence in the world.

The president of Amnesty gave his talk and mentioned just about every right-wing dictatorship in the world. Not surprisingly, he neglected to mention any communist regimes and what they did. I had my hand up to call his attention to Cuba, East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, the USSR, Red China, et al, when another attendee (with a slavic accent) made the same point. I've never forgotten the look on this guy's face when faced with the question of the political prisoners of the left. It was an instructive lesson for me; I will not donate or aid an organizaton that calls Guantanamo a "gulag" while they have systematically ignored castro's real gulags for decades.

They are hypocrites and deceivers of the first rank.

Sitting hidding in this report, there's one happy little island (hat tip Bonnie Raitt!!!!) who is one of the biggest human being traffickers of all times... Gulag, slavery, humiliations, torture, you name it, cagastro have it all!

U.S. Criticizes Key Allies for Human Trafficking
By ANNE GEARAN, AP

WASHINGTON (June 3) - Four U.S. allies in the Middle East are among countries added to a State Department list of nations that are not doing enough to stop international human trafficking, a practice the department described as modern-day slavery.

The State Department on Friday said 14 countries could be subject to sanctions because they are not cracking down on trafficking. Eight countries were new to the list: Bolivia, Cambodia, Jamaica, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Togo and the United Arab Emirates.

"Trafficking in human beings is nothing less than a modern form of slavery," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said as she released the report.

Saudi Arabia is a key U.S. ally whose de facto leader, Crown Prince Abdullah, visited President Bush at his Texas ranch in April. Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates also are allies, and the United States maintains an important military base in Qatar.

An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders annually, the report said. Eighty percent are female and 50 percent are children.

John R. Miller, Rice's senior adviser on human trafficking, said the State Department believes that "modern-day slavery plagues every country, including the United States."

Miller said the report's goal "is not to punish, but to stimulate government action to eliminate" human trafficking.

Human trafficking is driven by poverty, corruption, poor education and other factors on the supply side, the report said. Trafficking serves demands for cheap or forced labor, soldiers, prostitutes and the child sex trade, the report said.

"The child sold by his parents to the owner of a brick kiln on the outskirts of his rural Indian village is a trafficking victim," the report said. "So is the Mexican man who legally or illegally migrates to the United States only to be beaten by his agricultural crew leader to keep him from leaving the job."

The annual "Trafficking in Persons" report examines trafficking problems in 150 countries. It is aimed at raising public awareness of the global trafficking problem and encouraging governments to combat it.

Countries that were previously on the list and remain there this year are Myanmar, Cuba, Ecuador, North Korea, Sudan and Venezuela.

Countries that fail to do enough to eliminate human trafficking can be subject to a variety of punishments, including the withholding of some kinds of U.S. foreign aid. The United States will not cut off trade and humanitarian aid, the report said.

Countries that receive no such assistance can be declared ineligible to taker part in cultural and educational exchange programs.

Countries that were on the list in 2004 and have been removed from this year's list are Bangladesh, Equatorial Guinea, Guyana and Sierra Leone.

Congress began requiring the annual reports in 2000. This is the fifth report.

The United States spends $96 million to help other countries combat trafficking, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice wrote in a forward to the report.

Google results:

"Amnesty International" cuba - about 559,000 results

"Amnesty International" cuba -guantanamo -guantnamo - about 144,000

If we're to judge by a Google search, as you suggest, it seems Guantnamo is about four times as significant in combination with AI as the rest of Cuba. It's true they don't completely ignore it. It's merely a minor matter by comparison with America's sins against three hundred-odd people captured on the field of battle, who are provided with...

...oh, why do I bother? Sigh.

Posted by: jaed at June 3, 2005 07:23 PM

Okey - on little clarification on the slang - Bugarron is another Cubanism for bugerrer who is the "pitcher" but THAT aside.
Amnesty International has become as useful as the UN as bloated, self absorbed and self obsessed as any other foundation with $5,000 a plate dinners.
As Stalin used to say "You kill one man, youre a murderer, you kill 20 thousand men you are a statistic"
CUBA is just way TOO much misery, way too much horror, way too much pain suffering and abomination for "Amnesty International" to tackle.
Oh they are great at freeing ONE guy in a democratic country. HURRAY! So where is my other fucking $4,900? "Well you know... we DO need office space.

Oh yes there are BULLLETINS! Hell bulletins we have up the ying-yang, not any different than the "strong notes of protest " from the UN . Now the left media (in fact at this point I just think it is the fucking media in general) just loves those little sound bites, those little catch phrases. I can see the prick who came up with "THE USA HAS ITS OWN GULAG IN CUBA" how proud must he be, that son of a bitch. Where was this prick when Saddam and the sons of bitches in rightfully held Guantanamo where mustard gasing people by the thousands?

I am SO sick and tired of this anti-Americanism that seems to sell more books and newspapers than patriotism ever could.

WHO IS IT? Is it US the "silent majority for not screaming loudly enough ? I mean the left wing hippy peyote gobbling all is groovy crowd can NOT be the target marketing for the endless barrage of misinformation about the USA.
Many a times I think the only man who knew how to run his country was Francisco Franco. Yes a right wing dictatorship but BY GOD that country came from under the ruins and became an economic power house. Let's hear someone say that Franco had a Gulag in Morocco ..! HA! And *I* lived 3 years under Franco rule and the only thing I can tell you I found bad , was that you couldnt buy Playboy Magazine, and those things are important to a 13 year old. :P

As for Cuba; I was reading an article by Jorge Ramos last night. A non Cuban married to a Cuban woman so he feels "it is MY right to speak out loud about Cuba because my children have Cuban blood FUCKING RIGHT! And GOD BLESS HIM!

I had never read anything so precise so clear headed so to the point about Cuba, especially about the Cubans here in the USA. We have it ALL, but the ONE thing we want the most a FREE CUBA! And the USA has not done a GOD DAMN THING to help us.
He goes to say that it is just clear the USA doesnt give a shit, that the UN doesnt give a shit and that we must resign ourselves to the wait of a "natural death" of The Beast, because as he points out, assassination of Castro at this point is IMPOSSIBLE.

He rightfully points out there had been MULTIPLE occasions when an invasion of Cuba was not only warranted but shouldve been MANDATORY! And the USA, just passed. 90 miles from the USA and the government just went.. Hmmm , well pass So this tragicomedy of Anti-Americanism even within the USA government is de rigueur in todays politics.

When will we ever see a President who will face the TV camera and call on the carpet some motherfucker newspaper and make THEM apologize? When will we see a president who will publicly declare that a threat (like Chavez made of Latin American burning to the ground) will not be tolerated by the USA? When will we see some BALLS in the white house???

Now, instead of counter attacking the anti-Americanism , the government is almost apologizing for this newest of tags The Guantanamo GULAG . Will Bush (OR someone) go on a TV camera call a press conference and remind these bastards that that is TREASON?
Jorge Ramos goes to say Cuba and even Latin America are not of major importance for the USA Government in general. Apparently Patriotism within the USA has also taken second place to some other interest.
We have no way to go boys and girls. We are stuck in the middle of a black hole. WE ALL SEE the right answers but anyone with any power to act, just automatically rolls over and plays defense. The USA has become Michael Jackson , and OJ Simpson all wrapped in one.
If the USA government accepts the abuse the propaganda the lies dished out by every anti-American that comes along , what POSSIBLE hope can we hold that they will ever do anything to help us get rid of The Beast?

All those "peace at no cost" hippies are quick to compare the US with the worst crimes of modern man, but ignore the true atrocities happening right under their noses.

It makes me physically ill to think about what is happening under castro and other dictators, yet they always seem to get a pass from AI (and others) since everyone gets free, third world, health care.

If you got people who'd rather be eaten by sharks than stay and a government that feels it necessary to machine gun them down before the sharks get to them, odds are it IS A GULAG. And if you have American useful idiots babbling about "free health care" and "100% literacy," you really don't need to research the question any more. PRINT OUT COPIES AND PASS THEM OUT

Val, no matter where your readers are, in the U.S. or abroad, suggest in each important story that they copy them, print out a number of copies, and hand them out to school teachers and college instructors! Get the word out. Keep it going. You have many readers, but unless YOU tell them what to do to help, many simply read and then do nothing to help.

People are like that. They mean well, but until someone asks or tells them, they don't know the best action to take. Give them permission to copy it, if necessary, but get them to help.

And, again, ask them to send Links to friends, to bring in more readers. Many teachers will be horrified to learn how misguided they've been about Castro, because they simply take someone else's word for it and don't know where to go to learn the truth. WE must always help them to do things, because if we don't, the Liberals will continue to have only their viewpoint out there. It's up to us to win them back from the precipice of Liberalism to the safety and security of Conservatism.

The "drooling classes" are way too comfortable using words whose meanings they don't bother to look up. GULAG? The hell! Do such words as "Kolyma", "Kamchatka", "Anadyr" mean anything to these pieces of refuse? I bet not. These Amnesty whores were nowhere near Russia when shit was hitting the fan. They only strike when it's safe-- when the "enemy" they strike against is not even real.

That Cuba is an archipielago gives a whole new meaning to the phrase coined to define the dense net of death camps in Russia: Archipielago Gulag.

Posted by: CB at June 4, 2005 07:01 AM

When the Castro brothers are finally dead and and gone, when the full extent of their crimes become known, when their monuments are torn down and freedom once again returns to the people of Cuba...

What will AI have to say? Will they look back in horror and shame over what they've consistently ignored and minimized over the years? Will they lift one finger to help rebuild the lives of those crushed by a filthy communist dictator? Will we hear so much as an "I'm sorry?"

Forgive me for being so obviously rhetorical. We all know the answer. They didn't apologize for their ignorance when Eastern Europe became free or when the Soviet Union fell and they won't ever. These leftist, hatemongering Americaphobes will continue as they have for decades, blaming the United States and lining their pockets as the screams of the innocent go unheard. No revelation will change this.

These are not simpleminded, misguided, "useful idiots." They are willing accomplices to Castro and every other squalid totalitarian with an enemies list and a set of battery cables, so long as they hate America. While I'll stop short of offering them violence, they should be considered with an identical sense of revulsion and contempt that we afford their bloodstained travelling fellows.

Fuck you, Amnesty International. Take a good look at the ash heap of history. It's where you're headed, too.

Excellent post. My puke sister's puke husband travels to Cuba for his business, he's a cinema teacher. They just can't understand what harm it does. Unbelievable. True useful idiots.

Posted by: MM at June 4, 2005 04:24 PM

For the last few months I have been in AI and Human Rights Watch (HRW) web sights. The most recent articles are of the 75 dissidents arrested 3 years ago. I have been sending them articles from this blog and they have not updated a single word nor have they sent acknowledgement of my submissions. They will never respond because the communist experiment that is Cuba failed. Yes, an experiment. Cuba was perfect for these idiots, an island with an advanced society and infrastructure. For sure it will work there. Now that their little communist experiment blew up in their faces they can't admit that they fucked it up, so they cover it up and divert attention to the US. Just like junkies, its someone elses fault. Like the junkie who blames it on a disease or his "Enabler," the communist and their "Useful Idiots", like the MSM, AI and HRW will blame us for Cuba's failures.
I'm tired of the bullshit; of course none of them propose a solution. We can't kill them, that would be wrong. Now they never mention that these people have sworn to kill all of us and end our way of life. We can't keep them in prison where they can't kill us. That is cruel and unusual punishment. What are we supposed to do let them go and ask them to be nice? I'm sure they wont' mention that they probably live better in Guantanamo than they do in their own countries. SO its a gulag.

These leftists have copied castro's methods for seducing the intelligencia of the world. This begins in our schools and universities. Especially in our institutions of, "Higher Learning", where a student may not dispute the material and must write papers and responses in line with what the professor is imposing on them. Accept the indoctrination of fail! Our colleges have become factories for future and present drones that think on the line of the leftist agenda of people who will comply and follow.
SO thanks for nothing AI and HRW I will not be sending you a donation, though I will continue to pester you with the truth.

Not any more ridiculous that any public figure taking a political stand.
It is quite a cushy lil gig actually. Did we ever hear any more about the Food for oil scandal?? oh! Whatever happened to THAT?? Shshsshh ! Cant discuss that "we are investigating" - who is investigating? The UN is investigating the UN ? Don't make us laugh.

It doesnt serve AI to have democracy in every country in the world.. Cause.. THEY WOULD BE OUTTA A JOB! is THAT simple.
Now have a AI full of VOLUNTEERS, NO PAY AT ALL! Have it filled with Val like people, watch shit get done and in a hurry.
I simple "adore" these causes people of some fame embrace . Lady Di and the "Land mines" , yeah, go spend 6 month in Calcutta with Mother Theresa see how that works out.
Let's name ONE international organization that has accomplished anything of any significance since 1945! Hard to think of one, right?
I mean the soviet "block" didnt fall because of AI or the UN , the soviet block fell cause kids started to Listen to The Beatles and they wanted Blue jeans and Vespas.
In Fact I think The Beatles had more to do with the fall of communism that any other force of the time. Why? Cause all of a sudden out of nowhere the youth of ALL countries was listening to the same voice. Yeah trite and silly music but SOMETHING was bonding them. And THAT is what works. The moment you get a Lennon doing a bed in or a McCartney giving concerts against land mines it all goes to shit.
And that is what we are dealing with, shit organizations that for some reason or other the USA government deals with cause we dont want to piss anyone off. And we keep sending STRONG AND IMPERIOUS demands, that people like the Beast use as toilet paper.
I am going to quote someone who I think, will eventually be recognized as the VOICE of the real Cuba during the Beasts reign

Detrs de todos estos aos
Detrs del miedo y el dolor
Vivimos aorando algo
Y descubrimos con desilusin
Que no sirvi de nada, de nada, de nada
Que no sirvi de nada, de nada, de nada

Que no sirvi de nada, de nada, o CASI Nada
Que no es lo mismo
Pero es igual.

That is all we have left AORANZA
and we are ALL alone in this fight.

A-men to the Amnesty International Fuck you. I wrote them to let them know they had lost all credibility with me and I would never send them any type of donation ever again.

Someone mentioned a FULL page advert in the NY Times. I think this is a GREAT idea. Let us list in tiny print the thousands of cruel and inhumane conditions that the Cuban people suffer. From lack of Milk to their inability to buy property. ALL 12 MILLIONS of them not only 70 unjustly arrested individual which AI keeps tinkering at. I am sure we can put a page full of Human rights violations and CHALLENGE ALL International organizations to ANSWER about this or abdicate their positions as Human Rights Watchers, and let us see what kind of funding they keep getting.
I am in for a donation. Who wants to be on this?
WE ARE citizens of the world and the world owes us an answer !
This shit HAS to STOP!

Hear, hear! And damn well said!

AI sucks beyond any words that could be used to describe them.

Keep it up, Val. Keep it up!

KillCastro:

Very well said that all these world organizations feed themselves on chaos and have no intereest in ending human rights abuses except those that are fashionable.

Anyway it was Kathleen that had the idea for the one page adds. We have been discussing how to get funding. Any ideas?

I don't necessarily doubt what you reported, but just for the record, where did you get the information? I would just like to know, as I think it lends more credibility to the posting.

Phil,

Some of the whats written here has been from first hand accounts of family and friends, some from Valladares and various publications.

Trust me, each and every account here is true.

Kill Castro, Dr. Armando Lago is compiling a verified list of the regimes victims names. I like to see that published as well. Like Mojo said. We're trying to figure out how to make this happen. Also, I'd like to have a Babalu bumper sticker with the URL, it would be a good ad. I spend three hours a day on the freeway and cover a lot of LA. The more people we get to read here the better. Even if they dismiss the ideas, it becomes part of their consciousness.

Looks like he got it from Amnesty reports. You know they've criticised Cuba for decades, right? You know they've spotlighted prisoners of conscience on the island for years and stepped up their activism with Castro's increasing brutality since 2001?

No, Val probably doesn't follow the work of NGOs like Amnesty. Just criticizes when they point out our flaws. Oh well.

A good friend lead me to a source that may be valuable in funding at least the already have some cash earmerked for anti-castro propganda, I will follow up on that tomorrow. the pint here is to infiltrate the common conciousness of the AMERICAN people , no emotion , not crries of faul JUST THE FACT MA'm . as they used to say in Dragnet . THAT will hit the point with American people, we dont ned to preach to the choire we need to reach the grass-root american heartlnad and dpoint that 90 miles off their shores theres a bomb about to explode.
Will keep you posted.

Posted by: KillCastro at June 5, 2005 07:22 PM

Infiltrate the common consciousness. Exactly.

There is a website that has a least a hundred pictures of the real Cuba. Check it out! It's going to make you sick to your stomach.

Kathleen,
There are adhesive acetate sheets that can be printed with a regular system at home and that are very resistant. I can make a few graphics for you and you do your own homespun - homebrew bumper stickers. The good thing is that you can scrape them off and put another one!

Posted by: CB at June 5, 2005 09:19 PM

CB that's very nice. I thought of that but I'd like to stick the Babalu graphic on my car because its' so catchy but not without permission. Just the graphic and the URL I think would bring more readers in. Val?

Posted by: Kathleen at June 5, 2005 11:37 PM

Whenever I get the greenlight I am doing something eye-catching for you...
We need to get the word out.
