An Affair to Remember
Some Americans want so much to be dumbasses.
On the 18th of this month, in our nation's capitol, there will be a formal event - black tie only - at the Cuban Interests Section. It isn't - according to the event information - a diplomatic event. It isnt a state dinner or some other kind of government sponsored event.
It's a party!!! And you are all invited!!!!
BLACK TIE GALA AT THE EMBASSY OF CUBASaturday, June 18 at 8:00 PM Print This Event
Tonight, you are invited to the elegant Cuban Interests Section to explore the culture, cuisine, and music of Cuba, one of the most fascinating and misunderstood nations of our time. This is an extremely unusual opportunity; since the United States severed diplomatic ties with Cuba in 1961, this island nation has no official Embassy on American soil. However, in the late 1970s the Carter administration signed a bilateral accord establishing interests sections in both Havana and Washington, D.C. The purpose of these interests sections is to foster relations between the United States and Cuba. The Cuban Interests Section in Washington resides in a gorgeous mansion built in 1917; its thick red carpet and crystal chandeliers offer a spectacular backdrop for a true Havana evening. Sample a scrumptious Cuban buffet, sip on a mojito, a cuba libre, or wine at our open bar, and dance the salsa, the rumba, the mambo and the son to the beats of a live Latin band, the Orquesta Latin Soul. The diplomats of the Cuban Interests Section are excited to introduce you and your fellow professionals to Cuba's rich culture, which has been essentially inaccessible to American citizens for decades.DINNER BUFFET: The Cuban style of cooking is simple in concept but complex in flavor. Cubans have inventively combined Spanish, African, and Caribbean traditions and ingredients into a unique and characteristic cuisine. Chicken, pork, lobster, fish and, to a lesser degree, beef and lamb are the meat staples; black beans, rice, yuca (cassava), malanga (sweet potato), boniato (yam), and platanos (plantains) are the leading legumes and starches. Tonight you will enjoy an exceptional Cuban buffet. A full menu will be coming soon.
OPEN BAR: Sample an assortment of red and white wines, juices, the cuba libre - the classic Cuban rum and coke, and the mojito - a delicious cocktail made from rum, mint, sugar, and lime.
LIVE LATIN BAND: The incredible music of Cuba is celebrated across the globe in the form of several dances that originated amongst African slaves imported to the island to harvest sugar cane. The island's fiery blending of African rhythms and Spanish melodies was fused in the 1920s in New York with jazzy horn sections and drums, resulting in a big-band rumba craze. The most popular Cuban music today is son, which developed in the hills of eastern Cuba before the turn of the century and incorporates guitars, tres (a small stringed instrument with three pairs of strings), double bass, bongos, claves, maracas, and voice. Mambo, bolero, salsa, and chachacha music also derived from this form. At tonight's event you can dance the night away to the live music of one of Washington's finest Latin bands, the Orquesta Latin Soul. Fueled with Cuban, Puerto Rican, Colombian, and Peruvian flavor, the Orquesta Latin Soul proudly plays a variety of modern and classical Latin songs. Kris Diaz (El Pupi) began Latin Soul in May, 2002. Playing music since the age of 14, "Pupi" created a band that includes Steven Falcon, an internationally known sonero, and five other extremely talented musicians who energize the dance floor with the soul of their Latin roots.
SALSA LESSON: This event will also include a salsa demonstration and optional lesson; don't miss the chance to learn the hottest Latin dance around from Las Facetas de la Salsa, a team of dancers/teachers/performers who have successfully promoted salsa entertainment in the Washington area for the past seven years. This event will be the perfect chance to show off the skills you learn during Professionals in the City's June 16th salsa lesson at Lulu's.

Yes, that's right. It's a salsa singles party at the Cuban Interests Section in DC. Where the patrons can learn oh so much about one of the "most fascinating and misunderstood nations" in the world! A gala where you can help foster relations with the government of Cuba while enjoying the beautiful surroundings such as crystal chandeliers, plush red carpets and absorb the lovely mansion! A spectacular backdrop for a true Havana evening!!!
Of course, you neednt worry that this particular true Havana evening would be either a throwback to the pre-castro days of La Habana, or most likely a true Havana evening for the omnipotent tourist crowd of today's Cuba, where foreign jetsetters lavish in a posh lifestyle while the natives live as indentured servants. Slaves to the tourists and to el comandante. There's no need to bring all that reality with you. Its a party!!!
There's no need to wonder how many actual Cubans, from la Habana, will be allowed to attend this event!
And dont forget to bring an appetite to this fabulous gala because there will be a bountiful dinner buffet! Yes, a plethora of Cuban cuisine will be served for your culinary pleasure! And without ration cards!!!! No standing in lines for hours for a few pieces of bread and a handful of beans! No need to trade with those evil black marketeers for a few eggs and some powdered milk!
The Cuban Interests Section in DC is going all out, just for you, folks!
Make sure you wear your dancing shoes too, because there's nothing better than a little salsa to ease the conscience. A cha-cha-cha to wash away the guilt! Dance the night away! Eat, drink and be merry!
Dont worry all that much about those little pangs of remorse. Dont let that nasty feeling of guilt get in the way of a good time. The hundreds of prisoners of conscience on the island wont be bothered too much. The millions of Cubans that have never, can never, and will never be able to attend such an event, in DC or in Havana, want you to enjoy yourselves at their dignity's expense.

Val, if you want to go, Jim's idea sounds good to me. I hope there's a large protest with graphic photos to entertain the cagastro guests on their way to the ball. This is sickening.

I'm in and willing to pay Val's way to DC - Val I live 45 minutes from DC y mi casa es tu casa - but, in all fairness those people at the Cuban Interests Section are vile rats and Val doesn't need to spend any time amongst them.

"The diplomats of the Cuban Interests Section are excited to introduce you and your fellow professionals to Cuba's rich culture, which has been essentially inaccessible to American citizens for decades."
Inaccessible? Sheeeeeeeeeiiiiiit! All Americans citizens have to do is to go to Miami or any other Cuban community in the US if they want some of Cuba's rich culture...without having to spend $89. And they don't even need a passport.

well well...im sure jesse jackson will attend, los pastores por la paz, harry belafonte and the rest of cagastro lovers.
ojala que la carne puerco les caiga mal y se vallan en cagalera y tengan que limpiarse el culo con la bandera del movimiento 26 de julio .

I THINK WE SHOULD ALL GO!!!
Posted by: miguel at June 7, 2005 06:52 PM
Rather than going in to the party we should protest outside. We should wear gags and handcuffs symbolizing the political prisoners. I swear to God I'd love to do it. The last time there were protests outside the Cuban Interests Section they sent some goons out to beat up the protestors. I'd love to get my hands on one of the ñangaras. We should mobilize the Cubans in the DC area and in Jersey.

The country of Cuba is NOT misunderstood. It IS a beautiful country with fascinating history, wonderful food, and an amazing culture. However, the government is a serious problem to anyone interested an authentic Havana experience. Perhaps if the Cuban Interests Section wanted to provide a "true Havana evening" they could bring in Castro's minions to treat them the way people are normally treated there.
Oh wait....that's the S&M crowd that likes that sort of thing.
Whatever was I thinking?
Posted by: Da Goddess at June 7, 2005 08:36 PM
Wait a minute. I don't see any of those Cuban burritos on the menu.
Posted by: Juan Paxety at June 7, 2005 08:51 PM
I'll be there as I got FREE tickets, cant wait for this grand event to take place.
Posted by: Tony at June 7, 2005 09:25 PM
Further to Fishfan's comments, I was there the morning after those goons attacked some peaceful protesters. I had coincidently gone up there that Saturday morning with my kids to protest over the Elian situation when we learned what had happened the night before. Those goons try to intimidate free Cubans here in the US with the same tactics they can use in Cuba. I agree that protesting outside the Interest Section that day and night would be a good idea to shed more light on castro's human rights abuses and hopefully embarrass some of the attending tontos utiles. I wouldn't mind going there again and yelling at those scumbags!

89 dollars, a steal. A Cuban only needs to work 9 months to make it.
Can I pay in moneda nacional?

This sounds all TOO convenient and smack in the middle of a lot of political machinations on the part of EL SUMO HIJO DE PUTA so...Let me play "Paranoid Crazy Cuban” again:
To me this just sounds way too bizarre. If I was looking for some sort of a set up THIS would be it! So JUST IN CASE THE WORSE HAPPENS this is the scenario I think these motherfuckers have in mind.
They will pack the Cuban Interest Section to the rafters (open bar and full meal for $89.00 ???) then SOMETHING terrible will happen (like a bomb, bad fish , whatever) of course TERRORISM within the USA against CUBA ! Just as Cuba is complaining that the USA is harboring Terrorists. WHAT A FUCKING HEADLINE for THE BEAST. The same will happen if ther is a demonstration SOMETHING will go afoul and the Miami Mafia will take ALL the blame.
So 500 people die ... the propaganda potential is invaluable.
So if that is the plan.. Mr. KaSStro and you think this will bring an outcry to hand over Posada. FUCK YOU, you are getting too fucking senile to come up with anything new.
And the FBI god damn better keep an eye on this little shin-ding. As for me , I am calling the FBI in DC first thing tomorrow.
Posted by: KillCastro at June 8, 2005 12:03 AM
It's more likely to be bad fish but you bet the Cubans will screen visitors. You really think they let anti-Castro-people in?
But yes, lets keep an eye on this. My bet is they will cancel because of some evil tricks of the "Imperio"
Posted by: Eleggua at June 8, 2005 12:36 AM
The protests are great yes, but the best way is to fight fire with fire. Infiltrate! Quietly at first then when every one is chummy starts asking questions, then watch the faces changes. Let’s let them be the one that get violent and show their true colors. Who ever goes must be willing to take a few good shots. I'm willing if I can get a ticket. We should also plant a photographer outside the place and take pictures of every one that enters. Publish the pictures, smear their campaigns and show them as people who will not fight for human rights. Expose them for the hypocrites they are. This is exactly the tactics castro has used against us. Its time to turn the tables. I'm serious we need to plan this.

Even if one can't go in person and protest this shame-fest, one way of trying to deflate this balloon is to attempt to shame - and educate - this Professionals in the City organization about rubbing culos with these "Cubans." Send them a link to the Real Cuba (therealcuba.com) website via their email. In fact, the organization's email address is already posted in the Real Cuba home page. Ask them to take a look at the REAL CUBA. Send them a link to this blog too - ask these "professionals" if they can have the honor of attending cooking classes with el maximo comediante, the same ones any ordinary Cuban in Cuba can attend...yeah, right.
Tell them to have some dignity and stay home! That would be a hell of a silent protest.
Posted by: Alberto Quiroga at June 8, 2005 07:21 AM
Alberto:
I would love to see most of them stay home, but I'm pretty sure that the invitees are carefully selected sypathysers. One of the posters on this thread mentioned that he had tickets. If anyone can get in we need to have a good strategy. ALso, they idea of posting a photografer outside the event would be good too.
Posted by: mojoman at June 8, 2005 10:11 AM
You are right about the carefully selected invitees, mojoman. Still, there is value in spreading the information about this "event" to as many sympathetic (to our cause) groups as possible - that's what the lefties do when something offends them...if anyone knows any members of Professionals in The City (I do not, unfortunately), they could put pressure on them to skip this fandango, or encourage them to ask hard questions if they attend.
Posted by: Alberto Quiroga at June 8, 2005 01:13 PM
You so have to get someone to confirm who attends this perfume-on-a-pig gala.
Posted by: David at June 8, 2005 06:02 PM
I have been left out of the loop on this one!!
I bet all the Greek Orthodox "missionaries" are invited to this Gala of course.....
Not to sound paranoid,I have a feeling that all the "invited guests" have been reading this blog and getting their information on us...so if we go to DC, I say lets do a silent protest... stand there wrapped in a Cuban flag orjust have the women dress in white holding pictures of the Cuban dissidents...
Val...keep this going please!! it really insults my intelligence to have something like this right here under our own noses!!
