Sopa de pollo, o de ajo?
For about a week now I've been battling flu symptoms. Soar throat, headaches, escalo frios, body feeling heavy and sneeze and cough attacks.
It finally nailed me last night and today I fell like shit. Im staying home from work today and taking major amounts of cold meds. Blogging may be light today as I'll probably stay under the covers all day.

No doubt your condition is due to a weakening of the organism by harboring so many impure thoughts... :)
Hopefully, Maggie will put her healing arts into play right away. I would start with a "despojo."
Que te mejores, Valbal'u!

Just spicy food and rum. No ice. You can put some honey and lime juice in that rum. Dark rum is better. If you're really down, warm it up a bit. You'll be up and running in three minutes. Nada de sopitas. Real men don't have soups man. Nor salads!

Don't be sick - Steve G Hogonice will find out and accuse you of being pregnant!

Val,
The Sopa de Pollo from la Carreta on Kendall and 117th is excellent. We get it every time we're sick. It won't cure you but it'll make you feel better.

Feel better Val!
I'll tell you something that might make you feel better.
Today I was looking for a cortadito recipe on the internet and yo no se como carajo I came across this blog...but I'm so glad I did. I've been laughing, crying and missing my country since about 4 hours ago,no stop... reading everything!I left Cuba in 92, but lived in Spain 10 years ans a bit in Russia(you would LOVE my escapade story). Now I live in NY since 2002. It is very hard to find Cuban poeple here, in NJ there are still a few of those viejos en guayaberas, but young people, not that many.I think you are doing such a great contribution to our poeple and our culture. You are doing something good, taking some of your free time to create such a great blog. I wish you had a blog in Spanish so my dad could read you. He is also in Architecture...and writes just like you, but in Spanish...
Anyway, I wanted to say thank you. Do you come to NY at all?
regards to you and your family.

Sorry to hear that you're ill. I hope getting some rest will help you kick its butt.
I just read this biting Q&A by James Lileks and thought you might enjoy the humor, especially the first zinger:

just got over the "Crud" myself in 5 days flat.
You need to take one Zycam pill every 3-4 hours, take about 5000mg of Ester C a day, take 3-4 echinachea pills, 2 pills grape seed extract and rub your upper chest with Vicks vapor rub after a really hot shower, spray Lysol on everything you touch, eat nothing but chicken noodle soup, drink plenty of OJ and water and sleep a lot.
Dial 911 in case of an emergency or press 555 sin corriente for Dr. Cohetedude.
Get well soon buddy!

watch out for commies with needle tipped poison umbrellas

Screw them Val, get out of bed, drink whatever your man drink of choice is, in large enough quantities to kill the invading hordes and get on with it.
p.s. to Maggie. You have my sympathy.

Ni de pollo, ni de ajo. Find a Chinese restaurant and buy a couple of containers of 'hot & sour soup'. Make sure it's extra spicy. That's my first line of remedy contra el grippe. ..bruce..

Val... pollo or ajo... it's the salt that counts. Also, drink lots of water dude, because the flu dehydrates. Lay low on the coffee, since caffine will increase dehydration. This should help take care of the headaches and the feeling heavy.
To relieve your sore throat boil ginger root (not the powder but the actual root) and gargle it, that will take care of your sore throat. Also, spoons of honey and lemon should do the trick.
As for your coughs... they're usually caused by a build up of phlem in your throat. Gross. In order to releave it you can boil water with salt and lemon, and gargle that. It tastes REALLY bad, but it REALLY works.
Finally, if all else fails... try some Nyquil. :-)

Take lots of Vitamin C, or maybe the home remedy I used to get as a kid in Havana: Warm rum with honey -- I don't know if it really worked, but it made me feel good! Surgeon General's warning: "This medication is deemed unsuitable for children and subjects the person administering it to a swift visit from the local social services department."
Que te mejores pronto, hermano.

I hope your feeling better today! If not, try this and you'll be as good as new; Boil a pot of water with vicks vapor rub. When it begins to boil remove from stove and take deep breaths and inhale while hovering over the steaming pot. That will clear up you nose, throat and chest in no time. Pero ten quidado para que no te quemes!! See what happens when you tell a bunch of Cubans that something is wrong; you get a bunch of responses and everyone thinks they got the best remedy;) Including me. Try it. It really works!

Cubitabella, Hey! not every cuban in NJ is viejo!!! Well, ok, most of them are but I'm not and I've got a bunch of Cuban Americn friends that will prove it!!! And by the way, las guayaberas no son para los viejos solamente!! My husband has one in a every color in the rainbow! :) Where in NY are you? I live in NJ but work in NYC.
