When you erase the past...
...you are doomed to relive it.
Checkpoint Charlie, the gateway to freedom during the Cold War in Berlin, is to be razed on July 4th.

The Germans miss communism. Maybe they want it back. Socialism is pretty much what they stand for. This is just their way of saluting their dictators.

That's what you have when you have cryptocommunists and cryptofascists allied in a socialistic kind of goverment. Watch out for a new enemy.

I meant a new old enemy.
Apparently, they have forgotten the sound of the Nazi and Soviet boots
on the cobblestoned streets.
They will remember America again when they hear the screams Allah
Akhbar on their streets and squares and smell the acrid cordite
smoke... Then, they will call for America to come to the rescue. As it
always happens.
I am disgusted. They are stomping over the sacred ground that was dyed
red with the blood of people who died trying to escape communism.
What's next? An Olympic stadium over the grounds of Auschwitz?

Erasing such a marked symbol for freedom is a tragic mistake.
Someone was able to buy the London Bridge and rebuilt it in the USA stone by stone. I hope some soul with the foresight (and the cash) will do the same. If the Germans want to forget their past...
Those who ignore history are condemned to repeat it.
But, the USA also keeps sinking those car/ships in which Cubans seek their freedom, and THOSE truly are symbols of OUR history

KillCastro, I've been trying to find the nautical location(s) of those scuttled car boats to pass them to some friends in South Florida who are certified divers. I want to eventually take or obtain underwater photographs of them... I haven't been that lucky. Where the hell are the self made Cuban millionaires when one needs them to try to rescue those wrecks and place them in a museum????
Why is that nobody has offered those people a movie or book deal? Who are we waiting for? Nobody is going to come and do that for us....

The Germans miss communism
THAT is a very incisive and poignant observation Mora.
The responsibilities of freedom, liberty and democracy seem to be things some people do not accept quite readily.
There seems to be a longing for constrains of the past. The,what to do, when to do it and how to do is actually a very simple (and comfortable)way of living for many.
It is MUCH easier to bitch about not having money or food than it is to actually go work for it.
And when the freedom to resolve on your OWN , that which you are bitching about is there, you realize that your failure NOW is entirely upon your shoulders. THAT is traumatic!
I read somewhere, that tyrants , dictators and despots get to where they are because in a great deal of humans beings there’s an innate lack for self responsibility.
I am afraid that will see a similar display of ingratitude in Cuba
In Russia the most successful entrepreneurs are the ones who were black marketers during communism, why? Cause these people HAD the gene to go out and GET IT. If they could make a comfortable living under communism, what can they NOT do under a free capitalist government? But, a LOT of Russians are indeed longing for the OLD ways.
We all have read about slaves in the USA , that when told by their masters “Go, you are free” they just stood there wondering what to do next, and actually NEVER left the plantations.
To some people the worse thing they can ever hear is “GO, YOU ARE FREE”

The self made Cuban Millionaries (as you and I have spoken about) are busy making money :)
Posted by: KillCastro at June 27, 2005 12:26 PM
That's why we have been 46 years stuck with that bastard. Those who are the most generous and selfless generally speaking do not have the resources to make this struggle known....

CB, those cars are so deep, that specialized equipment would be needed. Most are probably out of reach for conventional divers and maybe even saturation divers. The cost to retrieve them, even if they can be located would be prohibitive.
