Shelby Foote, R.I.P.
I know this is off-topic, but I have to recognize the passing today of one my favorite writers, Shelby Foote, at age 88. He was a wonderful writer who has given me countless hours of pleasure with his magnum opus, The Civil War: A Narrative, a must read for any Civil War buff, history buff, or just anyone who loves good writing.
In case some of you do not know who he is, rent Ken Burns' film The Civil War; he is one of the commentators on the history of conflict throughout the twelve hours.
Goodbye, Mr. Foote. You'll be missed.

Both his historical masterpiece and the documentary by Burns are incredible monuments to a definitory era for the US.

As a photographer of Civil War reenactments and historical preservation causes going back to 1988, I became quite familiar with Shelby Foote and his work. His passing is indeed a sad, sad loss for the nation.
Thank you for memorializing him. It is well deserved.
To those who either don't know Foote at all, or only know him from the Ken Burns series, I strongly advice you to head for your public library and check out any of his books. I guarantee that you will become a Foote Fanatic in short order.

If you had to choose one set of books to read about the Civil War, you would have to choose his three volume masterpiece. I add my thanks to your posting about the passing of this great historian and wonderful writer.

I can't believe he died! That 3 volume set of his is fabulous, and a must have for any civil war buff.
