Capitalism or Socialism? (UPDATED)

I don't know if any of you Constant Readers caught the Live 8 concerts over the weekend. I didn't for various reasons: I don't like seeing elderly men -- and I am the low end of that category -- playing electric guitars and drums and pretending they were 25 again; I don't like being preached to by multi-multi-millionaires and half-billionaires; and, most importantly, I was pretty gone after having many glasses of Steve H's homebrew lager at ManCamp on Saturday.

The Live 8 concert went on and was full of the usual suspects: liberal/leftist poseurs expounding on how bad the US is and how we need be more generous (translation: our tax dollars) to Africa to curb that sad continent's grinding poverty. Madonna at one point told the audience to "start a revolution" -- thanks babe, I'll take it under advisement -- and Bob Geldof said that we had to just do "something" whether it worked or not. Funny stuff.

Nevertheless, despite the "good intentions", and despite the heavy guilt trip we were being given, certain commentators have hit the nail on the head regarding these telethons to curb poverty in Africa. Mark Steyn -- one of the truly great columnists and commentators writing today -- has written brilliantly about this in his piece published today in UK's Telegraph entitled "What Rocks is Capitalism... Yeah, yeah, yeah."

Please read it and enjoy the simple logic that he puts forth regarding the world's two "competing" economic systems. It is brilliant.

UPDATE #1: Mahone Dunbar has has some pretty cogent arguments of his own regarding Live 8 on The Paxety Pages, as does Fausta on Bad Hair Blog. Required reading.

UPDATE #2: The inimitable Jonah Goldberg of National Review has another fascinating take on Live 8.

And on THAT note.... TA-DA
Mr. P. Diddy , who had been HEAVILY advertised as a headliner in Philly NEVER showed up, preferring to spend the weekend on his Hamptons’ residency just hanging out (according to the NY Daily News) and not bothering to tell anyone till the last moment.
Yeap the Democrats can have him… in all his zillion $$$ glory.
Madonna needs a well placed kick in her Kabala (will she EVER stop making an ass outta herself?)
As far as Geldof , I think his heart is in the right place, but wouldn’t a nice accounting of how much each artist is PERSONALLY contributing to the cause would’ve been a nice touch ?
I mean if they want the government to which I pay taxes, to forfeit the debt.. I wanna know what Paul McCartney’s share of that is.

Hey KillCastro, exactly what we were talking about this morning.... We have a big problem here, since many people see performers as intellectuals and interpreters of history, economics, politics and the real world. Madonna doesn't live in the real world, does she? But well, according to some Michael Moore is also an intellectual. Let's face it, those people live in a parallel reality which doesn't give them any special vintage point to see what is really affecting this world.
Do they denounce kagasstro, the ayatollas, and the terrorist brethen? No? Well, so their job is not complete.
Besides, they have the moxie of asking us, their public, for money to contribute to the causes of their liking. Well, America already contributes with the biggest chunk of change to help Africa, both from private hands and from State funds. Bush is the president who has given more to Africa in history, fact conveniently forgotten at all times. Bush and Blair just erased the African debt before Live 8 came as a circus rocking the town.
Now, I ask all of those performers to reveal how much are they giving to that cause. They are the ones earning humungous royalties, living large, and keeping their monies offshore to avoid taxation. Still, they want to have more representation.
They are very grey, apparently in this world of ours, which is so black and white. They are grey. Pun intended. Grey inside and out. Grey little fellows of hardly any intellect? Just asking.
Compare to Bill Gates, who single handed apports more money than many goverments for health and literacy programs in the third world. Plus many charities right here, without fanfarre.

It's strange...no matter how many guitars I buy none of them have made me more informed on politics, morals, or economics. I must be buying the wrong brand. Maybe there's a secret potion involved that I forgot to drink. Or some Kool-Aid. Or something that gives these millionaire marxists their secret wisdom.

Posted by: Murel Bailey at July 5, 2005 05:51 PM

Buy country music guitars, that should do the trick.

Posted by: gansibele at July 5, 2005 06:57 PM

Ah Murel -- it IS the Kool-Aid!
Or have you tried a nice acoustic Ovation?
I hear their sympathetic vibrations increases your IQ by at least 2 points. The bad part is that when you have to tune them it all goes to shit.!

And in all truth, I don’t think these people are MARXISTS at all. I think we just give them an unfounded depth of wisdom based on their ability to entertain us.

I mean REALLY, can we even imagine George Michael or Madonna urging ANYONE to do ANYTHING?
“Suck a man’s pee-pee in a public bathroom for Uganda!” “Swap saliva with Christina Aguilera & Britney Spears for Zimbabwe” (well hmmm .. okay THAT one I may just go for)

Trudy Styler & Sting throw a “Save the Forest” party at $5K a plate and about $500 actually makes it to the Forest! Cause they have the fucking thing at the WALDORF and they serve a 9 course dinner! . Wouldn’t it be nice .. (Beach Boys tune coming up?) If they were all like Bill Gates? Who drops MILLIONS a MONTH and noone knows a thing about it?

These “STARS” just live in such a delusional state of reality that when you sit back and look at their efforts you just GOTTA laugh your ass off.
BTW the piece on the UK telegraph just ROCKS (and I am not being facetious).

I think Kid Rock said it best:
The day President Bush has a press conference to critique my last CD, THEN I will comment as to his ability to lead the country.

Posted by: KillCastro at July 5, 2005 07:00 PM

You know, KC, you have a way of cracking me up. “Suck a man’s pee-pee in a public bathroom for Uganda!” That was excellent! LOL!

CB -
Amazing how NO ONE mentioned on the concert that Blair & Bush had already okayed to write off the debt uh?
I am actually pissed off, I wanted to VOTE on that! or .. hmmm send doctors and advisors. Who ever heard of actually giving up CASH!?!

Posted by: KillCastro at July 5, 2005 07:08 PM

Hey, I GOTS my moments - coo-coo-coo-choo ;)

Thank you for the link, George!
Also, don't miss Kenyan blog Thinker's Room post titled, Live Aid? Please!

Great Job George.

Posted by: Henry Agueros at July 5, 2005 07:49 PM

I somehow knew that that little unimportant fact would not be mentioned. Blair, Bush, you know, they can't come with anything cool! KillCastro, can you imagine what would be of our world without Bob Geldof? I can't remember a single one of his songs...

Posted by: CB at July 5, 2005 07:53 PM

These performers who so overvalue their worth to the world, took time out of their busy servant filled lives to "do something" good. It is our job as one of "the people" to affirm what wonderful human beings they are, and of course make their cause our cause. Puke, puke.

The Boomtown Rats? Who?

Posted by: George L. Moneo at July 5, 2005 09:08 PM

Since we mention Bill Gates (who by the way is publicly against Bush's elimination of the estate tax, the same taxes that McCartney is criticized in the article for avoiding) let us also recognize another philantropist who gave ONE BILLION dollars to the UN. Ted Turner. Or George Soros, who has given more than 500 million to promote democracy in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet slave states.

I really don't understand why it matters where the money comes from, as long as is earned honestly and given freely.

Posted by: gansibele at July 5, 2005 10:09 PM

Soros? Earned his money legally? Are all those indictments just figments of the imaginations of teh prosecutors? And, BTW, I don't give a shit what Bill Gates thinks. He can afford not to care whether the estate tax is eliminated or not; I can't. And Ted Turner? Fuck him and his communist ex-wife.

Posted by: George L. Moneo at July 5, 2005 10:22 PM

You got me there. Altough I was referring to the money collected by the "delusional marxists" performing at the Live 8 concerts. And in the one case were Soros was found guilty of insider trading, he was fined 2 million which was the amount the French court said he profited ilegally. So at least 498 million were legal. By the way, I forgot to say those were his contributions for LAST YEAR ALONE. Overall he has given away more than 4 billion.

I'm against the estate tax btw. I just tough it was funny that a conservative would criticize McCartney for avoiding it.

Posted by: gansibele at July 5, 2005 10:43 PM

Notice the subtlety of the backpedal, the finesse, of the "oops my facts were wrong but...”
The factoid thrown in (Since we mention Bill Gates ……) as if to stamp the rest of the bullshit with the seal of the cognoscenti.
The light hearted “well I fucked up but ..."
The "but although I am wrong I am not THAT wrong"
The infinite shades of gray... weren’t we just discussing this?
The offhanded pitch for the liberal left wing fucks…
Intelligent, well read MY ass. Am I the only one who feels like puking reading this shit head’s babble?

Posted by: KillCastro at July 5, 2005 11:10 PM

Ah , The Boomtown Rats .. the least succesful Brit band of the whole punk movement.
Let us list the Hits .. okey ...
Hmmmm
Well
"Elephants Graveyard .. and ..
hmmm
Did I mention "Elephant's Graveyard"?
Bananarama had more hits ! how friggin' pathetic is THAT!

Posted by: KillCastro at July 5, 2005 11:16 PM

Yes, KC I feel like puking. Ted cagastro turner indeed. What does it matter where the money comes from? Plenty of nazis earned an honest paycheck. How would you rate their money?

Posted by: Kathleen at July 5, 2005 11:30 PM

Gansibele, you miss my point (and Steyn's): we are not criticizing him for escaping the estate tax. On the contrary! I admire what he did! It's his money and he should keep it. ALL OF IT.

What I get all riled up about is the hypocrisy of these dinosaurs and their social justice road show telling us to be more giving, compassionate, less selfish, and the like, while they are doing just what we would do! Except that conservatives -- real ones, not "compassionate" ones -- do not preach to the masses about doing one thing while doing another. We do what we do and say what we do BECAUSE IT IS RIGHT. Period.

Don't you think that Madonna yelling "let's start a revolution" is just too surreal? To paraphrase The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy she'd be one of the first against the wall if it ever came...

Posted by: George L. Moneo at July 5, 2005 11:36 PM

Turner, Mr Hanoi Jane, Soros, a traitor... so you are here supporting the people who want to destabilize your country of adoption Gansibele? Nice touch of gratitute, you very well read bright little Demo-Rat. You ain't more than their hound dog, to paraphrase Elvis, or better, you ain't more than their hound dog poop. I get personal, and I don't want to debate you or your defenders. I want to crush your bones to talcum powder, you Clintonista wipe-ass.

Posted by: CB at July 5, 2005 11:38 PM

Moneo, I agree that Madonna is an idiot. I don't give her any credit.

CB, eres muy guapito tú... behind a keyboard. I'll tell you the same as your confrere Kill, don't waste your time (too bad he doesn't listen, poor thing).
