Alvaro Vargas Llosa takes on che
It's today's must read - the brilliant political writer Alvaro Vargas Llosa has taken on che guevara in a long and awesome article in The New Republic.
Who is Alvaro Vargas Llosa? He is the Peruvian co-author, along with the great Cuban-Spanish Carlos Alberto Montaner, of The Guide to the Perfect Latin American Idiot - which has a whole chapter on castro-worship. You can just imagine what they think.
Today, Alvaro writes the truth about che 'the killing machine' and examines all the creepy sandalista idolizing of fidel's toad that we see in Hollywood and elsewhere these days. He describes che's love of Stalin and his murders of children. He sticks it to Carlos Santana - who does indeed know better and gratifyingly, we learn, was smacked down by great Cuban jazz musicians who told him that che tee shirt he wore at the Oscars was realllly uncool. Alvaro gets everything right and doesn't miss a thing. It's absolutely fantastic reading, and well worth the registration.
It's exquisite - Read it here.

Superb. And the icing on the cake is that it appeared in a liberal/left magazine! Do I dare hope...?

George: I'd call them middle of the road. They know there's something funny about che. They know he kind of stinks. Alvaro tells them why.

Well, Mora, at least they're not The Nation.

Excellent article Mora, great find.
It is ironic that Che ends up as a money-making tool. Poetic justice. I love the Argentinian saying "tengo una remera del Che y no sé porqué". It'll make a great T-shirt.
On aspect of Che's thinking that gets overlooked is his hatred for intellectuals, artists and "book people". As a megalomaniac adrenaline junkie, he considered them "soft" and prone to homosexuality. He confessed to one of his subodinates in Bolivia that he considered forcing Regis Debray to join his army to prove his revolutionary fiber. He'd have taken Santana, cut off his locks and send him to a UMAP camp faster than you could say "oye como va". Wonder if all the idiots who worship him realize that if they were to meet their idol, he'll more than likely send them on their way with a swift kick in the ass.

I have just read the recent article on Che Guevara by Alvaro Vargas Llosa in the New Republic. I confess that I was completely shocked by the things that Che did. I simply had no idea that revolutionaries actually carried guns and shot people. I thought that they baked cupcakes and held bake sales to try to persuade people nicely. I thought that maybe they rode their bicycles door-to-door, like Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses, and handed out pamphlets. I had no idea that they fought oppression violently. I would never have guessed that they would respond to centuries of exploitation with violence. I am sure that people in Latin America have no idea about any of this either. So thanks for informing them too.
Sincerely,
Gordon Barnes
