Tyranny: Fidel Castro is facing revolts after Cuba was hit by its worst hurricane in memory. The destruction will cost $3 billion. But Castro is doing everything he can to keep aid out. And that's an outrage.
Following Hurricane Dennis, a different wind is blowing through Cuba — the wind of change. Three spontaneous and rare demonstrations sprang up in Havana this week. Fed-up Cubans attacked an electrical substation after learning of yet another delay in restoring power. Other angry Cubans protested housing evictions.
The despair from hurricane damage on a neglected and oppressed people is leading to protests about Castro's rule. The third protest commemorated Castro's military assault on a boat of 41 fleeing refugees 11 years ago.
Cubans are in a dark mood. In the hurricane rubble, Castro's failed regime offers them nothing. The damage inflicted by the hurricane is worse than anyone realized. The category 4 storm howled across nearly the length of the island at 135 mph for 12 hours, knocking out electricity and power. Some areas are yet to be heard from.
The government admits 16 deaths — with unofficial estimates higher — signaling a breakdown of Cuba's civil defense system. Aid officials, who believed the system was good, privately admit shock.
Cuba's now a ruin atop a ruin. Everything's falling down. The housing stock, already rotten, is short 500,000 units. Cuba now needs repairs for another hurricane-hit 120,000 units, and thousands of those are total losses. The U.N. says 75% of the population is feeling it. With little left to lose, and state failure in reconstruction ahead, Cubans have begun to protest.
That Castro's slamming the door on international aid is an outrage. The problem is not the initial offer of U.S. aid that Castro turned down, calling it "miserable." Castro also warned Europe not to help, snarling that he didn't like their foreign policies.
Those are political reasons, reprehensible in themselves as Cubans suffer. More telling are the obstacles Castro has thrown up against private aid efforts. The State Department handed its rejected cash to nongovernmental organizations, and already one has had its 300-pound shipment turned away. It was trying to send buckets, chlorination tablets and blankets, but wanted to deliver them privately, not through Cuban state agents.
Castro has also turned down a U.S. disaster assistance response team, known as a DART, to assess affected areas and determine where aid is needed. These DARTs are the same highly skilled teams that swiftly pinpointed where emergency aid to tsunami-ravaged Sumatra was needed in the first hours, giving private aid organizations a road map for efficient aid delivery.
Castro doesn't want these private aid groups to see or have contact with Cubans who are beginning to challenge him. Amid the rubble, his only concern isn't reconstruction but clinging to power in his brittle, failed tyranny. That's why help is being shut out.
Castro says he needs $400 million to rebuild. He still has not asked even the U.N. for aid, suggesting he trusts no one. He can't rebuild on his own, so there won't be much rebuilding. But that doesn't mean the international community shouldn't speak out. Lifesaving aid to Cuba should not be subordinated to Castro's obsession with power. Fact is, he's already lost power.
Dennis has left Cuba in matchsticks. Castro must not get a pass to obstruct help just because he fears the matchsticks are igniting.

Excellent article about castro's tyranny and his disdain for the people of Cuba. This is the beginning of the end for his totalitarian rule as he will not be able to brutally repress 11 million Cubans much longer. Estan perdiendo el miedo!

I've been talking with people in Havana, the brunt of the storm
spared the city. That's why today cagastro is still in power, they told me.
They were expecting a monster storm falling onto Havana, and that would have
done away with cagastro's control... a civil war is ready to start in Cuba,
it is just waiting to ignite!

Hurricane season has barely started.

I'm hoping our government is stockpiling supplies at Guantanamo, getting ready. Surely there must be a plan, knowing the situation in Cuba.
Posted by: Kathleen at July 16, 2005 01:08 PM
I also hope that they are getting well prepared to defuse the perils of a civil war in Cuba and the carnage that is likely to happen once cagastro dies or goes down.

We can only pray for these poor people, and hope that our elected buffoons can stop trying to scuttle the ship of state for five damned minutes to help.

As the old saying goes, "Americans start wars to learn Geography". Until the Revolution, upwards of 90% of Cuba and her land was owned by wealthy, white American men. Long before that, Cubans had struggled to free herself from the Spaniards who had occupied their Island for many years. Right as they were about to win independence, the USA invaded, kicked the Spanish out and took over occupation themselves. After they installed a puppet government, the USA imposed various laws which gave themselves the right to invade Cuba again anytime the Cuban people got uppity. The history of Cuba is one of the USA interfering in Cuba's affairs in a way that would make Americans outraged if it happened to them. From the botched CIA invasion at the "Bay of Pigs" to the illegal occupation of Guantanamo, America continues to make themselves hypocrites in the eyes of the world. For the last 50 years, the USA has been a TERRORIST NATION. Simply put...there NEVER would've been a Castro without the USA. Americans, who busy themselves with watching upwards of 6 hours of TV a day such as "Fear Factor" and reading fluffy literature written for children like "Harry Potter" haven't a clue what their own government is doing, but can tell you in exotic detail what Cuba's government should be doing? Americans have lofty opinions on how Castro punishes "dissidents" but are strangely silent when their government tortures and humiliates "prisoners" at Guantanamo and hold them indefinitely without charges, lawyers or trial. President Bush invaded Iraq under false pretenses and killed THOUSANDS of innocent Iraqis during initial bombing. Americans just sit and watch, having little to say as they sip their Grande Starbucks Frapuccinos. Americans are pigs. Fat, arrogant and complacent, Americans are no longer admired by the world. It's not just radical muslims who hate them anymore. Congratulations, Americans! You make Castro actually look good.

So, cagastro's dad and my own family are the in the 10% of non Americans owning land in Cuba. Interesting. Maybe it makes me a cagastro relative, and that would explain why so many Cubans are suicidal, because nobody would like to see him-herself related to that crapsack!
Steve, go live in Cuba. Then crawl to Gtmo when you can't take it anymore. Remember, I have written here so many times about the direction of the rafts. They come South-North, they don't go North-South, maybe you want to start that new migratory current. Be prepared, because all the people who are coming are going to be laughing at the ones going...
Seriously, I won't debate you. It's useless. Maybe besides learning geography whenever there's a war, you should start learning history too. And if it doesn't work, man, well, what can I tell you... convert to Islam and issue a fatwa against me. By the way, maybe if you go to live in Cuba and you land in prison, you will have thoughts about being transfered to Gtmo. Bad news in that department, too. You can't. So you will have to put up with real torture. Give it a though. Maybe it's not as great as you think.
Or give it try! Who knows, maybe you like it down there, and you can even work in a camp training terrorists teaching them to hate America. After meeting you, they surely will!

By the way Steve, if you happen to be black I can furnish you with the address of my best friend in Cuba who happens to be a black doctor. He will happily take you to see how blacks live in Cuba, they way they are treated by the police, in hotels, prisons, and in their general everyday life. He will gladly introduce you to all the members of the oposition that are Cubans and black at the same time (we don't generally make the distinction betweeen blacks or whites or asian, but in this case to illustrate the point of cagastro's racism it is necessary) He will introduce you to the wife of Dr. Biscet a black prisoner of conscience who is an advocate for non violence, and many others who probably will help you to understand and see with your own eyes how the Cuban people is exploited and dragged everyday, and how if Cubans are third class in their own land, cagastro has made life for blacks Hell on Earth.
And here, well, go around in Miami, New York, New Jersey or LA you will see black Cubans who are in the professions, the arts, teaching, music, and with overachieveingkids. Ask them why. Don't insult them telling them what you wrote in the blog, they are civilized and nice and they will show you the door if you do so. Have a nice life.

I was ready to write about the matter of this topic and I found the drooling marks of the previous commenter, Steven, which got me a bit off mark.
There's a saying about Nature defeating dictators or brilliant military strategists. The only French man with some guts to become great, who was Italian by the way, Napoleon Bonaparte provides us with the greatest example of this: His all victorious Army (well, la Legion Etrangere was his mainstay and maincore)was sunken into ignomony by the Great Russian Winter. General Winter delivered the most resounding defeat to Napoleon, and his decline started.
In cagastro's case, he has been referred to as both friends and fiends like the Napoleon of the Caribbean. I have to concede that it takes a lot of ass kissing and ignorance to utter that phrase, but hey, that what they have called him when he was at the top of the African wars. My prediction is that if men and women cannot defeat them because of all the known reasons, being the lack support and logistics the main cause, cagastro is going to find himself defeated in his own inneffective ways by the sheer force of Nature. Had the hurricane landed in Havana, it would have triggered a revolt which cagastro's police would have been unable to soffocate. And in the eyes of the world, that's something that doesn't sit well... citizens who revolt in the middle of the rubble and confront the police, the army, that's a powerful image that cagastro doesn't want to see broadcasted live from Havana. He, though, can rest assured... since his citizens are not terrorists, the Mainstream Media will not call them insurgents!
But Nature will wipe him off. Death of a rotten nonliving babbling corpse. Or a storm. Nature. Sometimes Mother Nature helps us, some times she needs a little help from us.

Bien Hecho CB!
Speaking about megalomaniacs defeated by nature and men, we should all remember that Maxi mus Napoleon Bonaparte was too--- ass whipped in the slave revolts of Haiti. http://www.nalis.gov.tt/Biography/Toussaint_LOuverture.htm
It is now only a matter of time for the Cuban Sun king (in reference to yet another French tyrant) http://www.chateauversailles.fr/en/220_Louis_XIV_An_Absolute_Monarch.php
to be crushed by both nature and pissed-off men--- both in Cuba and Venezuela--- at the same time. Je souhaite!!
It's the time of reckoning---Cela est la Vie!

The times of reckonin'are a-comin'!
Posted by: CB at July 17, 2005 03:20 PM
I would like to make a prediction: once the bearded old fart is gone, there will be a lot of rafts going in the direction of Cuba, from Haiti, Mexico, Bahamas, Jamaica and so on. One thing, though, those countries should remember how friendly to Cubans were they, because they won't be admited into free Cuban territory.

This is a tad of topic, there are news that Al-Qaeda is threatening the Vatican and Rome as the capital of the (s)infidels. I think that the craddle of Catholicism gets hit we should flatten down merciless Mecca and other repositories of the Religion of (BLOWN TO) P(IE)CE(S)That will maybe teach them a lesson!

Holly shit... The morons are at it again!
"The history of Cuba is one of the USA interfering in Cuba's affairs"
Hey ASSHOLE ... You with the thorough knowledge of USA and Cuban history...
Who were these "wealthy American white men who owned MOST of Cuba?"
Why wasn't Cuba annexed to the USA (as was Puerto Rico) after the Spanish American war? Who would’ve (who could’ve?) stopped the USA from doing so? Why go through the charade if Cuba was going to be a simple colony?
Why didn’t the USA bomb KaSStro to kingdom come while he was hiding in the country home he quaintly called "La Sierra Maestra"
Who taught YOU history? Lil Kim ?
You know really, professional propagandist in Kuba HATE assholes like you because you take away ANY credibility they may try to assert by way of your complete and total stupidity.
Now, this I MUST grant you.
“there NEVER would've been a Castro without the USA” , Yeap , the USA denied Batista the planes he needed to get right of the motherfucker.
As far as your IRAQ diatribe, yeah yeah yeah we have heard it all, we do have freedom of speech in the USA, haven’t you heard? Michael Moore beat ya to it !
Now "Steven", go be a nice piece of cultist shit and drink some Kool-Aid.
