En La Madre Patria

Babalú reader Fernando Z sent me the following photo from San Sebastian, Spain:

Which just goes to prove that you can take the Cuban out of Cuba, but you can't take Cuba out of the Cuban.

Gracias, Fernando.

from the "you cant take the cuba out of the cuban" file
in brasil, pinga is a liquor, kinda like aguardiente.. if the faucet is leaking, its "pingando".. its a common word, means nothing vulgur.. in rio, on copacabana, just off avenida nossa senhora da aparecida there is a cuban guy who opened a bar and called it: "el pingon", right by the "cubacabana" cigar shop.. whenever you see people taking sinickering and taking pictures of it, you have a pretty good idea where they are from..

And I suppose that the favorite drink at "El Pingon" is a "Pingazo"??? ...probably with rum...
Make mine a double... not that there's anything wrong with that...?
I became aware of this Brazilian... aberraci'on, shall we say... a few years ago, when I worked with a colleague born and raised in Rio at a Florida university and one day she invited me to her house to have some "real" pinga with her husband.
Believe me, it took *a lot of talking* to set me straight...
I still laugh heartily when I'm reminded of the situation.
As'i es la vida... larga y peluda... as a friend of mine at The Miami Herald used to say...

Did I miss something here??? What do Pingas have to do with Babalu??
Are there pingas attached to Babalu??? and do they "come" in a form of a cocktail??
Example:
Margaritas pingonas?
Pina colada con pinga??
Cuba Libres en pinga?
Pinga Martini with two olives?

Do I need to travel to Brazil to find some real pingones???
Just checking......
