katrina.gif

Can you say PLYWOOD?

There. I knew you could.

UPDATE (By George Moneo): As of 11 AM EDT a hurricane watch is in effect for Florida City in the south to Vero Beach in the north. I can only assume a warning will be issued tonight or tomorrow.

Fun, fun, fun! -- NOT!

Damn! This means it's going to rain all freakin' weekend. Buckle up.

Posted by: j.scott barnard at August 24, 2005 09:45 AM

And Mora, I think this one's gonna be "Katrina".

Posted by: j.scott barnard at August 24, 2005 09:45 AM

I ordered aluminum shutters for my house on June 30 right after the budget-busting shed my wife wanted -- a structure, I might add that would make several underpass dwellers very happy to habitate in -- was paid for. The guys told me it would be 12 to 16 weeks for delivery of the shutters. Katrina is arriving at the start of week 9 of that schedule. Oh well. Plywood it is!

BTW, Val, batten down the hatches at ManCamp™ -- wouldn't want any errant grills and beer bottles flying around Miami-Dade County...

Posted by: daniel at August 24, 2005 10:14 AM

well you guys have to deal with the hurricnes for a few months.
I have to get ready for the aproaching winter season.
snow, ice, freezing rain, slippery roads,5 below zero and the wind blowing cutting you face...shit
and thats for 6 long months.

Posted by: tocororo at August 24, 2005 10:45 AM

So, you barricade yourself in with stockpiles of food and drink. Sounds like indoor mancamp debauchery to me. Do we get a stormcam?

Posted by: Kathleen at August 24, 2005 11:10 AM

And this my friends is the first reason why Virginia is better than Miami.

Posted by: Maura at August 24, 2005 12:20 PM

Kathleen, debauchery the old-fashioned way: no electricity!

Posted by: George L. Moneo at August 24, 2005 12:31 PM

George, so it's a theme party, La Habana?

Posted by: Kathleen at August 24, 2005 12:46 PM

Ok, if it's a hurricane I take back all my party comments. Be safe all of you.

Posted by: Kathleen at August 24, 2005 01:24 PM

God is apparently tired of swinging at me and missing.

Does anyone remember the 1926 Cuban Hurricane that knocked down the Maine Monument?

Posted by: M.A.T. at August 24, 2005 02:12 PM

I guess it's Miami's turn after missing all the action last season. Be careful all. Storm watchers may enjoy this site run by weather enthusiasts on Florida's east coast: http://flhurricane.com/

For everyone's sakes, I hope it stays weak and passes quickly!

I'm surprised no one's blamed me yet for this one.

Unless this thing makes a drastic shift to the north, looks like Hurricane Warnings will go up at 11 PM for all of SE Florida. Still has a ways to go before becoming a hurricane, though, so hopefully it won't be more than a Category 1.

When people ask why I left Florida, this is the first thing I think of.

Posted by: Dave J at August 24, 2005 11:15 PM

MAT...1926 was way before my time, however, I don't remember ever hearing about a hurricane knocking down the Maine Monument...I do remember in the mid 60's while the Revolution was still young, that the eagle on top of the monument (representing the USA) was knocked down by no other than FIDELITO CASTRO RUIZ~~
This information I can give to you as an eye witness, since I lived accross the street from the Maine Monument. I can still remember the eagle coming down just like the statue of Sadam Hussein did in Iraq.

Posted by: carmen at August 25, 2005 12:27 AM

Carmen: The Maine Monument had to be constructed twice and inaugurated twice. The first eagle was knocked down from its pedestal by an act of Nature; the second eagle was ordered toppled by a "Desnaturalizado." But, yes, the Hurricane of 1926, the worst in Cuban history, destroyed the first Maine Monument. You can find pictures of the devastation in the "Libro Conmemorativo del Monumento al Maine" which was published as a souvenir for Spanish-American-War veterans when the second (and identical) Maine Monument was inaugurated in 1928.

The eagle that Castro ordered toppled in the early 1960s, is kept, with its wings clipped, at the "Museum of the Revolution" housed in the former Presidential Palace. One day, of course, the bronze eagle will be restored to its perch atop the Maine Monument. But let it be positioned so that it is flying toward the sea and away from Cuba.

M.A.T.
Thank YOU for the information....I wondered what happened to that poor eagle that was taken down like a wounded bird!!
