The cucarachas crawl
It has started. castro's apologists have gotten the word from Havana and are now out trying to foist castro's spies - errr, "doctors" - upon us. They haven't stopped trying. With the advent of Hurricane Rita, they seem to have gotten more aggressive, like cucarachas whose sewer seems to have been disturbed by the flooded storm drains. So now they are out.
Some wretched creepy-crawly, a new one, named Peter Bourne, is now writing letters to editors as castro wishes, one to the Birmingham News which didn't have the good sense to scrap the garbage and spray RAID. Their headline:
Cuba can teach U.S. about disaster relief

PETER BOURNE
It has been more than two weeks since Cuba first offered to dispatch some 1,600 doctors, bilingual and specially trained in disaster relief, to the Gulf Coast communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Although up to now there has been no official answer from the United States, we can safely assume politics will prevent any normal diplomatic response. There is little doubt that Cuba's speedy offer, if accepted, could have saved many lives.
Unfortunately, with Hurricane Rita striking this weekend, forecasts indicate this year and next will be some of the most active hurricane seasons in history - accompanied by all the hazards their fury implies. For the public good, U.S. authorities at all levels should learn more about how small, resource-constrained Cuba reduces the risk of disaster and disease when these storms strike.
The rest will make you throw up here.
But who is this insect? Why is he sticking up for castro? Who turned down US aid and let his people suffer.
Well, Google him with Cuba. Google him with "Wayne Smith."
As you can see, it's not a pretty picture. Wayne Smith's been out shilling for castro, too, and along with this Bourne creep, they go way back. All the way to the Jimmy Carter days - who's been up to the shifty dealings described in this editorial here.
What a repulsive way to spend one's life. Defending the indefensible. Spreading lies. Maybe doing it because castro caught you in bed with young boys and showed you the photos, or else because you like the kind of privileged access castro gives you every time you traipse off to Cuba. Could be anything. What it isn't is upfront or decent.
This creepy cucaracha is out lying to defend a tyrant. He's our enemy. His feathery antennae are touching our shoulders. Somebody needs to step quickly and crrrrunch.

[..] specially trained in disaster relief [...]They'd kind of have to be, what with working in the disaster Castro's made of Cuba and all.

I am a Cuban-American who unfortunately is not as well informed as I should be. Certainly not as well informed as all you guys in this and other Cuba related blog sites. So, for the sake of those less educated, and for the sake of those in Cuba, why don't you post some responses to these people, like Bourne, for example.
Many of us simply are not very well equipped to answer these liberals. Since you guys seem to have all or most of the answers, why don't you counter their allegations with the facts that you allude to. And, no! I am not a castro lover. I just get frustrated when you call these people liars and not tell us why. Give us some ammunition here.
Sincerely.
Manny R.

Manny,
You bring up some good points. You can start by searching this site and going through the archives.
If you aren't already familiar with these sites, then I also highly recommend visiting The Real Cuba - therealcuba.com, and Net For Cuba - netforcuba.org
Good luck and welcome!

Manny,
IMHO don't waste your time with The Real Cuba. It's all one-sided there. It's much worse than the original post that you complained about here.
It's tough to get well-balanced info on Cuba. Cubanet can be quite balanced. CNN International, BBC.mundo (sometimes a little sympathetic to Castro, but good coverage of the dissident movement)isn't bad. There are lots of good archives here on Babalublog. The authors here post lots of good source articles.

Fielding: If you've got something to say about this post you are commenting on here, will you kindly address it to me? I've added some links for Manny's benefit. What is it you would like?

Mr. Mora,
I just found this link http://www.state.gov/p/wha/rls/fs/2005/49782.htm
which is probabaly the one you were referring to on your previous post. It is the proof of what you said regarding Castro refusing to accept U.S. help through DART.
Anyways, this is what we need so that we can answer the likes of Peter Bourne, Wayne Smith, and who ever that Stephen was, back on the July post. It is probably more work for you, but it really helps when the source is given, not only to convince ourselves, but to show others that you are not making this stuff up. Remember, you are not always just preaching to the choir, there are others that are searching, confused perhaps, and need to know the truth, accurately researched and presented.
Thank you for listening.
Manny.

Mora,
I was just giving an opinion, just as Robert was doing. I read a little of Bourne. He fails to put the 25,000 doctors into context, ie. the propaganda use. I agree with Manny that you could elaborate more on exactly how Bourne lies about Castro. I don't think he lies so much as I don't agree with his opinions.

Dr. Peter Bourne - I had not thought of him in years, but I remember him well. He was buddies with Jimmy Carter while Carter was still governor of Georgia - Bourne was hired to set up a statewide drug treatment program. There were lots of rumors in Atlanta (where I lived at the time) that one of the people most in need of drug treatment himself was Bourne.
When Carter was elected president, he took Bourne along to Washington as Special Assistant to the President for Health Issues. Bourne lasted only about a year - he was caught writing a fraudulent prescription for a staff member and rumors were spread that he was spotted using cocaine at a Christmas party. The Christmas party was hosted by NORML.
Bourne's drug polices were always controversial, but, in fairness, all drug policies are probably controversial.
He is now chairman of an organization calling itself "Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba." That shows he's not simply a doctor with an opinion, but rather and advocate.

Manny: I put up a link to an editorial I copied earlier regarding the DART program. I'm glad you had the gumption to look it up and check it out at the State Dept's site. I only link credible sources from the news. Whoever wrote that editorial got that news straight from the State Department.

Fielding: I'll take that as your apology. Thank you.
