castro and American POWs
We Cuban-Americans often get blamed for linking fidel castro to everything bad that has ever happened in this world. You name it, fidel had a hand in it. Rumor has it castro is even involved in the latest Florida Marlins' fire sale.
Well, yesterday I was watching "A Mano Limpia", a popular Miami Spanish-language current-events talk show, in which the topic was about Cuban "torture agents" who traveled to Vietnam for the sole purpose of torturing and beating American POWs.
Sound incredulous?
The whole thing ran bells in my head but I couldn't remember where I had first read about this. Then I opened Humberto Fontova's book "Fidel", and there it was, on pages 141-143.
Consider this excerpt shamelessly lifted from from Fontova's "Fidel":
"During the Vietnam War, the Communists ran a 'Cuba Project' at the Cu Loc POW camp (also known as 'The Zoo') on the southwestern edge of Hanoi. The 'Cuba Project' was a Josef Mengele-type experiment run by Castroite Cuban to determine how much physical and psychological agony a human can endure before cracking. The North Vietnamese never asked the Castroites for advice on combat, only on torture.
For their experiment, the Cubans chose twenty American POWs-mostly Navy fliers. One died: Lt. Colonel Earl Cobeil, a Navy F-105 pilot. His death came slowly, in agonizing stages, under torture. His torturer, nicknamed 'Fidel', was identified in congressional hearings (and in the Miami Herald in 1999) with great probability as Cuba's minister of education, Fernando Vecino Alegret."
That's right - Cuba's Minister of Education.

Of course, all you faithful Babalu readers know by now what kind of education Cuba likes to export.

Scary thing is, George, that old Rick here is some kindo of "lay rabbi" at some synagogue. I know for a fcat that other bloggers have had run ins with him as well and they contacted said synagogue and has some choice words with those folks.
