I think you should recommend Cuba's fine education system to her, mention the Medical Schools fidel has set up just for Americans like herself. Ask her to drop you a line when she gets back from say Venezuela, or Pakistan.

Posted by: ziva at December 29, 2005 11:10 AM

Did you send her the My Man in Havana link yet, Val?

Posted by: Miguel-O-Matic at December 29, 2005 11:23 AM

Apparently Ms. Baxter is contacting any site with the word Cuban in it, with the same bullshit about getting her book published in Cuba? Wait, I cannot stop laughing. I am OK, I'll go on. She obviously typed it using her knuckles, or is this ebonics. Here is what she posted at www.cubalinks.org

carolyn baxter said 12 days later:
greetings,I went to BARD college myand this has NOTHING to do with you blog entry..but i saw Cubanlinks and thought id give this a TRy.I just completed a manuscript called Assata hip hop an me.from my meeti and becomming friends with Assata Shakur when a teen in rikers island.were published together and anthologised many times. I was wondering if you could suggest a CUBAN publisher as i would like to have it published there first. thank you carolyn baxter. carolynbax@msn.com

Val,
Just forward to Baxter (what, she no longer uses her "African" name?) the e-mail address of the Ministry of the Interior, and assure her that that's the offices of Cuba's biggest publisher.
It'd be interesting to find out how her inquiry is received there, her being (apparently) a former "political prisoner" and all.
Smirkingly,

Is this person a real one or some type of a joke on you?

Posted by: A. Gonzales at December 29, 2005 02:36 PM

Thank God she's not a medical transciber.

Posted by: Scott at December 29, 2005 03:29 PM

In reponse to A. Gonzales, Baxter is very real, sad to say. She thinks that becuase she was somebody at Rikers Island (prison), she too will be accepted on the Cuban Island (bigger prison). Although, I have not confirmed it, you can see her picture at http://rapstock.textamerica.com/.

Posted by: Orlando at December 29, 2005 03:42 PM

Send her over to Mad Magazine? Regardless, I've always believed there's a reason rap rhymes with crap. You're likely dealing with a graduate from the Shakur-Ho Institute of Technology - possibly there's an overseas branch in Havana.

And by the way,
Someone please tell Carolyn that there's even less milk and less honey in Cuba than here in the bad ole USA.
Incontrovertible fact... she can look it up.
I sure hope that she finds out how things are in Cuba, particularly for the darker-skinned segments of the population, before she travels there and suffers a terrible decepcion.
Peace, Sister.

tocororo libre....took the words right out of my mouth....

Posted by: adriana at December 29, 2005 06:32 PM

Scott, what makes you think she isn't?

Posted by: aelfheld at December 29, 2005 07:01 PM

Hmmm - medical transcriber by day, rapper by night. Kind of like Flash Dance. Ex-con transcribing radiologists' reports while trying to win a publishing deal in Cuba.

Actually, considering how I misspelled "transcriber" earlier, it's a good thing I'm not either.

There's nothing I like more than marxist poetry. Really.

Why not help her get a publishing deal in Cuba. After all there are two sideds to every story. The Cuban people deserve to know just how messed up America is before they leave a country with free healthcare, education, food, and shelter. I thought you conservatives were all about "fair and balanced" anyway. At least that's what they say on fox news.

Posted by: Kim at December 30, 2005 02:16 AM

y los comemierdas siguen llegando, sometimes ist betterjust to shoot them instead of making them understand the reality of cuba,I never consider myself a conservative a think I am more of a centric, but then you have this castro lovers judgind everyone when they don't know a fucking thing about cuban history.
just look a this fucking criminal, writing crap about jail, and making money from the fools like her.
hey maybe we should send all this convicted criminals to fidel and that way clean our society

Posted by: tocororo_libre at December 30, 2005 04:59 AM

I have a better idea. Let her publish her book in Cuba of "wrap crap" poetry as Alberto above so eloquently called it. I am sure that she is a very altruistic individual that will accept whatever payment the Revolution can offord: a ration card and a rice cooker.

Posted by: Orlando at December 30, 2005 08:11 AM

Kim - The Cuban people could learn anything they want about America - the good and the bad - if the criminal dictatorship they live under would allow them open access to the radio and tv signals coming from the US, access to satellite tv, and free access to the internet. They would also be able to learn first hand if the dictatorship allowed them to travel freely - to and from the US, but it doesn't. Our country doesn't require exit visas - Cuba does.

Free health care? Cubans have paid the highest income tax in history for extremely rudimentary health care. That makes it expensive health care - not free health care.

Free education? We have it too, Kim. Haven't you noticed? Your "messed up" America provides 12 years of free education. In my state, if you keep a 3.0 GPA, you also get a tuition-free college education at any state-run college or university.

Free food? No - you're wrong. Cubans have to work 40 hours a week, just like us. But they have to get their food using ration books. Can anyone on the list provide Kim with a figure for daily caloric intake for Cubans? I don't have those figures at hand. Besides, homeless people get free food too. Is that an enviable position?

Free shelter? Please visit "The Real Cuba" and see pictures of Cuban housing.

And Kim, if you think this blog is all conservative, you haven't been paying attention.

Posted by: Scott at December 30, 2005 08:30 AM

Here's a question for the Babalu bloggers:

At least 10% of the Cuban population has moved to the US.

Having experienced messed up America first hand, how many of them have gone back to Cuba to live?

Does anyone have a figure for that?

Posted by: Scott at December 30, 2005 08:36 AM

Kim, here's a bit of 'fair and balanced' for you: you can leave America, freely, openly, and legally, if you choose; it may just surprise you to know that Cubans can not do the same in Cuba. Let me be even more 'fair and balanced' and remind you that it's Liberals like yourself who've championed and applauded every totalitarian state for the past century.

If you weren't just another stupid, ignorant, troll, you'd know the 'free' healthcare, 'free' education, 'free' food, and 'free' shelter are paid for with personal liberty. You may aspire to be one of Beardo's slaves, but others aren't as willing to don the shackle and the collar.

Posted by: aelfheld at December 30, 2005 08:41 AM

Kim,

How "fair and balanced" has the paredon been where thousands have been executed in Cuba? How "fair and balanced" has the imprisonment of many more and the deaths of many thousands more in the Florida straights fleeing your "free healthcare'? What isn't balanced in that regard is that you don't see ANYONE fleeing the U.S . trying to get to Cuba, except COP KILLERS and murderers like Shakur. Kim, a hearty FUCK YOU...
Other than that, happy new year! Please give up all that the evil capitalist USA has allowed you to earn and put your money where your mouth is, get a one way ticket to Cuba,,,
Is that "fair and balanced" enough for you?

Posted by: Max at December 30, 2005 09:23 AM

Val,
Why don't you forward to Carolyn --and to Kim-- the website dedicated to Dr. Elias Biscet?
They just might learn a thing or two.

Kim? Kim from Americatel? Please tell me that was not you making that comment about Cuba and all their "free" benefits....

Posted by: adriana at December 30, 2005 03:42 PM

Good lord, if someone who has that tenuous a grasp on the English language can get published, clearly it's the leftist lean of your work, not the quality that matters. What a sad testament to education in New York City.

somebody please tell this kim chick what we all know:

The balsas only travel in one direction-

and it doesn't matter how much she runs her mouth with incoherent, ilogical babbling, that says it all.
