Google is gone

Ive removed the Google ads from the sidebar of this blog in protest of Google's recent decision to censor searches in China. I cannot and will not be an accomplice to the censoring of information.

I will also, like Steve, no longer use Google as my search engine. The dissemination of information should not be curtailed in the name of profit.

Val,

Yahoo here I come; however, it is very important that they (at Google) are directly made aware that this will hurt their bottom line as free thinkers everyone will choose another search engine.

Posted by: Orlando at January 25, 2006 11:00 AM

Orlando,

I agree. I emailed every Google support address I could find and let them know exactly what I thought and why I dropped their service.

Posted by: Val Prieto at January 25, 2006 11:05 AM

Now I'm really glad I don't use my gmail account!!

Posted by: Amanda at January 25, 2006 11:36 AM

Oh shit. I'm going to have to give up Gmail.

Argh.

Posted by: Dean Esmay at January 25, 2006 11:37 AM

Bye bye Blogspot?

Posted by: Robert at January 25, 2006 11:40 AM

Sorry Orlando but Yahoo already censors the web for the Chinese gov't. Microsoft does too. There goes hotmail, windows and internet explorer. You can make a much bigger dent boycotting chinese products.

Posted by: Greg at January 25, 2006 11:41 AM

Greg:

If you like Intel or AMD, use Linux.

Internet Explorer? Feh. Firefox.

Hotmail? Feh. Other web-based email answers exist; use 'em.

Many of us already boycott Chinese products. It's perfectly legitimate to turn up the heat on "useful idiots" here.

Besides, you can always make note of who's advertising on Yahoo and Google... and start boycotting THEM. Just make sure you write these firms and tell them why you're switching.

Guys, we have a real conundrum here. On the one hand, we do not want to support those who support tyranny, on the other, we live in a free, democratic, capitalist society that forces (or impels) companies to make business decisions that are, at best, loathsome. So what do we do? Greg (see above) writes that "Yahoo already censors the web for the Chinese [and] Microsoft does too."

Where do we draw the line?

So glad to see the rest of the world wake up to Google and it's left suck-up antics. I've been boycotting Google for years, ever since I read how they slant searches on conservatives to post the negative/dirt first. Good riddance. Hit 'em in the wallet, guys.

Posted by: Gigi at January 25, 2006 12:47 PM

It's funny folks - until today not a day has gone by that my library listservs haven't been filled with conspiratorial criticisms of Google - they slant search results to sell products, they do this, they do that, they've got your medical records, they're watching you have sex, blah blah blah.

But today - not a peep. I've been at work 6 hours, and not ONE SINGLE POST about Google committing censorship - in a communist country.

Posted by: Scott at January 25, 2006 01:10 PM

Do you really believe that Google gives us, here in the 'states, un-fiddled-with search results? Don't you think the Chinese cats who use Google believe they are getting a real search engine? Who is getting fooled?

Posted by: PTG at January 25, 2006 01:36 PM

Personlly, I stopped using Google about a year ago. I use Dogpile as my search engine of choice.

Posted by: guido at January 25, 2006 02:03 PM

Dean: the Yahoo email beta is worlds ahead of Gmail anyway. It's literally Outlook in your browser, with full drag-and-drop and everything works just how you expect.

Posted by: Ian S. at January 25, 2006 03:16 PM

Val - investors are dumping Google today on precisely this reason. It's taking a bad tumble in the market on a day when it should be going up. The reason is: the China censorship.

The market is hearing us!!!

This search client seems not to use Google at all: http://www.copernic.com/

It requires an install on your machine rather than running from the network.

I've been finding Copernic useful for years. I think I plugged in some cruel crack about castro a couple of years back and found this place that way.

Posted by: Murel Bailey at January 25, 2006 06:08 PM

This is a tough one. Not the act of boycotting Google, but being consistent. Let me be clear, I am in COMPLETE agreement with Val for choosing not to use Google. Still, even the symbol of American capitalism, Walmart, sells a gazillion chinese items. Are any of us going to boycott Walmart? There are very few stores that don't sell Chinese imports, and sometimes there are no alternatives to those imports.

I hate it when the left uses the example of the way we deal with China as a reason we should lift any trade restrictions with Cuba. First of all, one wrong does not make a right. China is repressive and communist. It is a paradox however that in China it is possible to be wealthy in terms of money and yet have absence of human rights.

The Chinese were given "most favored nation" status by guess who? Bill Clinton. At the same time, Taiwan, a bastion of democracy and prosperous nation, was not.

I do think our legislators should NOT give this status to the Chinese. Why are we rewarding brutality?

I think the reason why the stock was dropping was that the US gvt. now will require google to hand over the search records to control internet porn - google was planning to sue saying that it violated their rights- funny huh?!

It will be hard... but Google can shove it.

Because if I wanted to advertise for your commie restaurant, Victor, I would make sure you paid in greenbacks. And in advance.

Asshole.

Humbert Humphrey was no gentleman.

"Do you mean to tell me that your position is more important than four hundred thousand black people's lives? Senator Humphrey, I know lots of people in Mississippi who have lost their jobs trying to register to vote. I had to leave the plantation where I worked in Sunflower County. Now if you lose this job of Vice-President because you do what is right, because you help the MFDP, everything will be all right. God will take care of you. But if you take [the nomination] this way, why, you will never be able to do any good for civil rights, for poor people, for peace, or any of those things you talk about. Senator Humphrey, I'm going to pray to Jesus for you."

No, Humbert Humphrey was NO gentleman.

Google punted my blog months ago.

It gets worse.

Google is buying radio advertising technology, probably anticipating 2008. They know that the GOP has a huge lead in mindshare in talk radio.

By filtering out the right, which has been proven, Google will end up only advertising for their political allies.

Posted by: Aaron's cc: at January 26, 2006 10:45 PM

Oh, and radio stations, in order to remain profitable, will have to bow to their revenue supplier.

Posted by: Aaron's cc: at January 26, 2006 10:46 PM

Aaron...as with everything in the market, radio stations have to get people to listen so they can sell ads.

If nobody listens to your station, companies will not buy ads in it.

If you have lots of listeners...you will sell a lot of advertisement...

That is why talk radio is mostly conservative (and that's not GOP) - that's why air america is in the tank -
