The News Ticker, Flags and One Pissed Off Dictator (UPDATED)

There's much speculation as to what, exactly, it is that fidel castro is building in front of the US Interests Section in Havana. Obviously, whatever the finished product, it is meant to shield the messages being displayed by the news ticker. Cuba's totalitarian despot simply cannot allow his people access to outside information much less the liberty of thought it may lead to.

Being that the news ticker is a few stories up, it would be structurally almost impossible, and certainly impractical, to erect a free standing wall high enough to block the ticker from being seen.

Sources for The Real Cuba - and we probably will not be able to confirm this as fidel himself has boasted "If we tell you it would ruin the surprise" - are informing us that the work currently underway may be the structural base, platforms, for a series of very tall and tightly fit flagpoles which will fly numerous flags in the hopes that they will ultimately shield the news ticker from view.

Such is the nature of a totalitarian regime. Prefering to expend all its remaining resources on erecting a huge blinder as opposed to repairing the crumbling infrastructure of its country.

The Revolution: Evolution in reverse.

UPDATE: Via Charlie Bravo at KillCastro, here's a photo from the adjacent building the Someillan:

Charlie Bravo also has a report from sources in Havana on the extent of the construction activities. Apparently, the construction and equipment are taking up parts of the US Interests Section parking lot and are now but a mere few feet away from the ground's perimeter fence.

UPDATE: The Real Cuba sources cited in the original of this post were correct as ABC News has just confirmed:

Castro Retaliates With Flags

Cuban President Fidel Castro, after marching more than a million people by the building earlier this week, has ordered construction workers to extend an open-air stage in front of the mission right up to within yards of the gate. He plans to mount huge flags on the stage to block the ticker from view, a construction ministry source said.

Update January 31, 2006:The flag poles are up!

Wouldn't it be just poetic if fidel builds his tower 5 stories tall then the USIS moves the ticker up to the roof?

I would find it even more poetic if the wall were to collapse... while the tiranosaurius maximus is delivering one of his interminable "peroratas" at the base of El Muro de la Impotencia.
Hell, I'd even write a poem about it myself!

I find it sadly amusing that barbudo has the money to build this thing and yet he continually says Cuba doesn't have any money.

I guess that means he has all the money, huh?

hijo de puta.

Julio, now that would be priceless!

Doesn't the U.S. Interests Section building have more than one side?

If I were in charge, I'd wait until Beardo finishes his Tinker-Toy project, then mount a second news ticker on the other side of the building.

Beats people shooting at each other.

Bwahahahahahahahaha!

We're the world's sole superpower. I think we can win this arms race.

On the basis of the photograph published in the original post, the Interests Section scrolling sign should *still* be quite visible from the Malec'on.
I wonder if we're going to see a lot more "foot traffic" there, or more "lovers* sitting on the wall, after the tiranosaurius completes his "surprise" construction?
And then, will the pissant dictator find a way to prevent people from sitting on the seawall or strolling along the Malec'on?
Hopefully, the U.S. can install a similar sign on the opposite side of the building... thus forcing the tyrant to spend even more scant resources if he wants to build another "barrier" on the opposite side.
Let the "battle of ideas" continue. We are not afraid to give them a fight, because we have the truth on our side.

I wonder what flags will go up - I kind of doubt there will be a US flag there.

i vote for waiting and then introducing a news blimp tethered to the building. pissing off Castro is priceless.

Ahh the leftists never cease to entertain us. Castro has long been supported openly by America's left -- I wonder what they would think about this little pathetic act of defiance by Castro? This is just one more example out of millions of why I renounced being a "liberal" and joined the conservative cause for freedom. Socialism, communism, fascism - whatever - it is all about control by the state of your life, including what speech you can and cannot say and hear. Wake up world.

As the very model of a modern Major General would say, "Aha! I have it!"

Let the U.S. erect in flaming Times Square brilliance a gigantic marquee showing close-ups of El Barbudo from (say) the hours of 8:00 to 12:00 PM. The curling smoke, the dashing camoflage fatigues... at other times, Cubans might get, ah, other images-- perhaps footage of the Marine Expeditionary Force in Kuwait, Baghdad as US Army armored columns flashed past heading North. Occasionally a motif or two, such as "Che died for your sins", that kind of thing.

Point is, 'twould be entertaining, with a kicker. And could Fidel resist his outsize phiz looming four hours a day over his Ghost Capital? Maybe we could project reruns of Pinky and the Brain each afternoon, attributing inspiration to the Maximum Leader and his pustulent offshoot, Hugo Chavez.

Two things dictators uniformly lack are, a) An imagination, and b) Any sense of humor. That is probably why Lefties in general are such dolts-- no perspective, no awareness beyond their narcissistic selves. But there... I ramble on. G'night, Mates, may sunshine brighten all your days.

John Blake,

If you are indeed from Australia, welcome!

You have very good insight for someone so physically far away and not privy to what we may be here in South Florida!

G'day to you too. Can't wait to visit Australia.
