Flagpoles!!!
George of The Real Cuba does it again. Behold fidel's new flagpoles:

As I've stated before, that sure looks like a lot of concrete, wood, welded wire mesh and steel reinforcing that could be used to restore some Cubans' homes instead of being wasted in a failed attempt at blinding the Cuban people.

There'll be a lot of hoopla and all the Vanessas (whore media in Havana) will come out to cover it, but bit by bit, each of these flagpoles and cement blocks will be snatched away to make balsero rafts and housing reinforcement. Just watch.

Robin, I do believe it is time to take the Bat-Signal out of storage...

This development, if covered by the press, will reinforce the notion that castro keeps information about the outside world away from his people. It is truly a hermit kingdom. We should remind people of this every chance we get. No satellite tv, no radio, no newspapers or magazine and (hell no!) no internet allowed for the average citizen. This is the kind of thing that will connect with folks stateside and in Europe that don't pay attention to the details.
Prisoners of conscience, citizens cut off from the outside world and the export of violence should be repeating themes in our work.

I'm having evil thoughts of those flagpoles and how cagastro and his cronies could be hung from them.

Re: the castro bros and chavez: I know of a good use for those flagpoles...

1)As has been pointed out, the flagpoles may yet have their (unintended) use, should "the dam break" in Cuba -
2) After they outlive their usefulness, these materials will be recycled for the restoration of the Malecon and Havana - and there will be plenty other examples of crap-socialist pseudo architecture to take down and recycle - such as the hideous (former) Soviet-era building in Miramar.
PS - all this is more proof el viejo cagalitroso is crapping all over his pants and is so far gone he doesn't see what this says about his "island paradise" to the rest of the sane, rational world.

Is this out in the MSM yet or did RC and Babalu scoop them again?

How does Castro defend spending Millions on flag polls but then tells as his diplomatic friends the country has no money to survive????

Aside from blocking the view, and as you say blinding the Cuban people, this looks horrible! Que cosa mas fea!!!

Gallo: Her, too. castro's handmaidens, all.

One only needs to figure basic geometry, a trigonometry exercise from the times of High School to realize that from a determined vintage point, and only from very defined area the flagpoles will partially cover the ticker. The second you step a few inches out of that area, well, you are looking at the ticker again.
Is he going to wall off the whole building? Is he going to forbid people to stroll down Malecon? Is he going to condemn the windows of every neighboring building? This is classic kagasstro: smokes and mirrors (and bad geometry)

Yes, isn't that something! So, Cuba is suffering from the throes of "el bloqueo asesino" yet at the drop of a hat, Castro can come up with all of the cement, metal, fabric, cranes, equipment and supplies to built all of those monumental flags. Just like he comes up with gigantic banners, t-shirts with slogans and graphics painted on them, and thousands of posters overnight for those protests that he forces on the unwitting masses even though allegedly, Cuban school children don't have notebooks, papers or pencils because of, yep, "el bloqueo asesino!"

There has to be a story here... or many stories... of people told to stay away from the flagpoles, to be angry at what's behind the flagpoles... and I see a little girl or a little boy sneaking past the flagpoles to see the words.... and not understanding them at first...

The Beast can't even muster up enough creativity to combat a humble news ticker. Those flagpoles estan tackysimos, brother.
Posted by: Gigi at January 31, 2006 09:34 PM
Hmmmm.... I wonder if those poles will be strong enough to support a human body dangling from each of them...?
Each of them just might make a good "justice platform" come Liberation Day...

Simply and utterly childish

Those flagpoles look just the right size to ram way up el barbudo sideways. Not that anybody would want to do anything like that to him.

Two thoughts:
1) Won't this just draw attention to the ticker?
2) Is this the best choice for a hurricane-prone island? I mean, those things could make pretty serious projectiles then next time a big storm comes rumbling through. Especially with the flags as sails.
I'm calling it the "Flag Gag" and I think I'm very funny. Cheers!
Posted by: AcademicElephant at February 1, 2006 05:35 PM
Academic,
The FlagGag is sheer brilliance!
My firstthought when seeing the poles was "hurricane projectiles" and my first wish was that one of them would impale you know who in the middle of one of his diatribes.
Cause you know, concrete takes about 28 days to cure, installing those poles at anything close to 48 hours is just plain stupid. Once concrete loses compression from any weight or movement while settling, it's useless.

LW: architecture, style and things looking good have never been castro's strong point. You should see those edificios en Alamar! Yuck!
Posted by: nurian at February 1, 2006 08:17 PM
Well, Val, there seem to be a lot of the poles and you-know-who is pretty slow on his feet these days, so maybe the law of averages will help us out here? Especially if the gods have a sense of irony?
