Still Googling?

I swore off Google for good the other day when they appeased the Chinese government and began censoring information available to the Chinese people. Now, I always had my doubts about Google. I have numerous Google searches set up specifically about Cuba and consistently the top search items are always from Ahora.cu or Periodico26 or other Cuban propaganda sites.

Of course! Some will say. Those web portals are always reporting about Cuba. Well, yes. But take the Miami Herald, for example. It publishes stories about Cuba daily and rarely, if ever, are links to those articles in the first and second pages of the Google search. I find it hard to believe that the only news sources in the world that report on Cuba are sites like Granma and Workers World and Vietnam News Agency and the like. Sites that are for the most part propaganda portals.

But it gets worse.

Our friend Aleksander Boyd of Vcisis had his share of listings in Google for his excellent and honest reportage of Venezuelan news and events. I say "had" because they no longer show up on Google searches. They have been systematically removed by the Goliath search engine. And Alek has the evidence to prove it here.

So, if you are still using Google as your news search engine and think you are getting an honest listing of news in an unbiased and professional manner, think again.

"Don't be evil" is Google's corporate motto. Perhaps what they mean by evil is anything having to do with truth.

yahoo seems no better either.. cisco is in a similar boat.. this is from a blog posting by richard posner, who has a blog with nobel (relax its in economics) prize winner gary becker:
Yahoo apparently provided information about one of its Chinese customers that led to his arrest and a 10-year prison sentence for political activity that would be legal in the United States. Cisco is said to have sold equipment to the Chinese police that assists them in monitoring dissidents.
just imagine if they are/were doing the same in cuba.. IF, they are selling their equipment and user info to oppress human rights, i think a fair question is why not sanctions againt china, or at the very least, the companies? now ive never been one in favor of the current use/ enforcement of the embargo, but when stuff like this is going on, in a country whose government is not far removed from castro style oppression, i have to ask, why is it allowed to happen, and why such haphazzard and selective enforcement?

It's shameful, but common. I think it was Mao Zedong that quipped that "[i]n the end, we will hang you and you will sell us the rope which we will hang you with." He knows the West better than some in the West know communists. Which is the reason why I give none of them any quarter.

I hate Google, but I had to give up my plan to boycott the search engine. It was just too hard.

I had to be satisfied with removing Google ads from all my sites.

My stepson Christian is 13 years old and he is an eigth grader at Jose Marti middle school in Union City , NJ. Last month he was given an assignment in school in which he needed to choose a country and write a term paper about it. It needs to cover geography, history, government, economy and culture. He chose to write about Cuba. While at school, he went on google and msn search to get all of his information. Christian knows how his father and I are always talking about the situation in Cuba and how we feel about alot of things but we have never sat down with him and explained things to him in way that he could understand. When he showed his father all of the information he printed, my husband was ready to have a heart attack due to lack of truth that was missing from ALL of the information that Chris had printed. I began to read it and got sick to my stomach with the content. The pages glorified the free healthcare and free education that the glorious revolution has provided. It also glorified Che as a martyr. I felt awful that Chris had wasted his time researching the subject in vain. I helped him to recollect the information he needed and we took allot of things from Fontova's book; Fidel Hollywood's favorite Tyrant and he printed some interesting pics from The Real Cuba site in order to illustrate them in his report. My husband and I explained many things to him and I was so impressed to see how interested he was in learning more about the subject. He couldn't understand why the information he had gotten from the internet was so far from the truth. Well, his report is due on the 27th and I'm very interested to see what grade his very liberal teacher will give him on his project. Google is definitely not the way to go when searching for the truth about Cuba.

I'm not sure about this, I just ran this search in both google and yahoo and vcrisis was the first result.

Posted by: Oscar at February 23, 2006 11:57 AM

it wasn't hard for me... it just takes some getting used to.

The hardest part is telling somebody to search something... for I was used to using the verb "to google"

Posted by: nurian at February 23, 2006 11:59 AM

This is the search I entered:
North American Opinion Research (NAOR)

Posted by: Oscar at February 23, 2006 12:00 PM

I just did the search in google.co.uk and google.cn and received similar results.

Posted by: Oscar at February 23, 2006 12:06 PM

Oscar,

Do that same search with google news.

Posted by: Val Prieto at February 23, 2006 12:09 PM

Val,
I just did this search in Google news and received similar results. Vcrisis comes up first.
In both US and UK

Posted by: Oscar at February 23, 2006 12:15 PM

Now with all that said, if you remove the (NAOR) from the search you do get different results and Vcrisis does not come up. This is in the UK version of google news.

This is really strange. I verified the seraches prior to posting this and came to Aleks concluion: they were being lifted as they did not show up on the listings.

very odd indeed.

Many moons ago, when this topic was discussed here, I chimed in with the fact that Google has been carrying this modus operandi for years. I had read about it but didn't have any evidence - till later. They are truly subversive; their creators/owners support all sorts of leftist causes.

I am very happy to see that now otehr users are finding that out .... and hopefully its stock will keep on plummeting to the leftist ground where it belongs.

What we need is the search engine equivalent of the Fox Network - and am not even advocating it be biased to the "right," although that would be the right thing to do. Meantime, it is good to spread the word about this, and if Google's stock keeps dropping, well, maybe that confirms the free in free markets. People are free not to support Google. Maybe that will serve as a wake-up call for them.

Gotta start weaning myself away from Google.

The answer to why US companies are allowed to do business in China is, simply, money. They salivate over the ability to access that huge market of consumers. This trumps any moral considerations. The corporate execs use the excuse that it will help China open up. This is a lie, but one that makes them big bucks. The Chinese think long-term and are in it for the long-haul. Our administration and business leaders think short-term.

Val, Oscar, when Val posted this I did the search w/o NOAR on both Google and Google News. On the news site, Vcrisis came up first, on Google it didn't come up period. Which was the reason why I asked what the issue really was, because I was getting mixed results.

Posted by: La Ventanita at February 23, 2006 04:20 PM

Perhaps I didn't explain myself well enough. NAOR is the acronym, the search which vcrisis on top of the rank was for north american opinion research (no quotes no acronym)

The pesky issue is that only two days ago vcrisis was on top and yesterday it wasn't. Please note that it is regular google we're talking here, NOT google news. Today Val said that he saw vcrisis right on top, so I set out to do some searching and I found out that the results of different google domains, for instance.com, .co.uk, .de, .it, .fr, .co.ve, .es, are different. Case in point in google.co.uk the article was there two hours ago (got the screenshot this time) right now -21:40 GMT- is no longer there. I'll guess I'll write a bit aout it later on...
