Ropa Vieja

Old Clothes. That's the name of one of Cuba's quintessential culinary delights. Ropa Vieja. Its a relatively simple dish consisting of shredded beef in a type of stew with tomatoes and of course, the Cuban sofrito base. My mom would make it at least once a week and my sister and I would drive her crazy saying "Old clothes old clothes old clothes. We're eating old clothes old clothes old clothes."

"Que ol clo ni ol clo," Mom would say. "Es rrropa vieeeeja." She'd exagerate the pronounciation. "Rrrropa vieeeejjjjaaa."

Such a peculiar name for a food, no?

Well, a couple of enterprising young Cuban-Americans from New Jersey have taken the "ropa vieja" thing to another dimension. They've come up with a great line of new clothing under the brand name of "Ropa Vieja." New clothes labelled old clothes.

They've got a great, fun line of shirts and shorts and other apparel, among which are the "Che aint my hero" and the "ño" shirts. And of course, my personal favorite the "pau pau" ladies shorts.

Ahem...

The design of their website is superb, so I urge you all to check it out and if you like their stuff, let 'em know. Tell them Babalú sent you.

And, if a great line of clothes, a lo cubano, plus a pretty darn cool looking website arent enough, they've put together something else for you all. A game where you guys can spend quite a bit of time playing, with the extra added bonus of getting to shoot Che Guevara:

Che Invaders!

Last year when we were at Cuba Nostalgia there was a vendor, Havana on the Hudson, there and their clothes are similiar to these. These are awesome because there is total lack of CubanPride things in my neck of the woods.

I've seen a lot of tee-shirts, but few worn so well.
