Military Committees

Via Cubanet, we have news of military mobilization in Cuba upon the transefer of power to raul castro:

FROM CUBA August 2, 2006 Youths mobilized in Havana after news of Castro's illness

HAVANA, Cuba - August 1 (Juan Carlos Linares Balmaseda / www.cubanet.org) - Starting at dawn August 1, Havana's equivalent of U.S. draft boards, known locally as military committees, started mobilizing young men registered to them following the news the previous evening of Cuban President Fidel Castro's transferring power to his brother to undergo surgery.

The military committees keep a registry of all Cuban men who have finished their military service until age 45, after which they are enrolled in the reserves. Registration is obligatory; any change of address or employment must be endorsed by an official of the appropriate military committee.

Please read the excerpt below and tell me how all signs are not pointing to Castro being dead or at least incapacitated

Ways to tell how grave Castro's condition may be

by John Dorschner. jdorschner@MiamiHerald.com. Posted on Tue, Aug. 01, 2006.

''The next 36 to 72 hours are going to be crucial in Cuba,'' said Andy Gomez, a senior fellow at the Unversity of Miami's Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies.

The key signals may be first revealed by United States satellites. ''Looking at the special forces base south of Havana, if we see heavy tanks moving around, then we can be sure that Castro is gravely ill or close to death,'' said Gomez, who has spend years studying Cuba.

Other major indicators: If Raúl Castro doesn't speak in public in the next 72 hours, it might indicate that he is not in firm control of the power his brother left him with.

To "piggy-back" on the above comment with insight provided by Dr. Nicholas Robins, a visiting scholar at the Duke Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Duke University:

“When Fidel Castro dies, Cubans probably won’t be told for 24 or 48 hours,” said Nicholas Robins, a visiting scholar at the Duke Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. “Raul will use that time to root out restive elements in the regime and implement a big security presence.”

While we in the USA should (and will) be happy with the demise of this lunatic, I am very fearful for what will happen to the citizens of Cuba within the next two weeks.

My guess is that castro's passing will be announced Friday or Saturday....
