Cuban housing
How'd you like castro in charge of your housing? You'd live in real estate that looks like this and as a consolation, you'd get to blame it all on the U.S. embargo, despite the fact that that embargo exempts just about everything. There's also the long overlooked fact that Cuba's free to trade with any other country in the world, so long as it pays its bills. But still, castroite housing is hell. But no need for any examination as to why housing done by castro looks THAT BAD.
Meanwhile, after 18 hours of bloviating from castro, you'd get to learn that castro planned to build more housing, something you would supposedly have to be grateful to him for.
Except that he never bothered to do it - there were too many trips to Argentina to make and now the intestinal cancer he's got that's laying him low and has given you his murderous brother raul as a consolation prize. No, he doesn't keep promises to build housing either.
Nominally, the castroites claim it's high energy prices and lack of cement that's keeping housing from being built, as well as the higher priorities of schooling and hospitals - overseas, tools of castro's political agenda. As for Cuban housing, castro can't be bothered and fully 10% of the nation is homeless and god knows how many others are living in place a Bronx slumlord wouldn't countenance.
La Ventanita's got a kickass post up - a real thoughtful one, that gives me a lot of things to think about - on castro's failed promise of housing here.

I'm sure you know about this, Val, but housing is so tight in Cuba that, if you divorce, you have no where to go.
The solution? You stay in the same tiny apartment, and put up a wall to separate you from the ex. Your ex-spouse really is still there (don't think you won't hear her or him), and your living space is divided in half.
When you have no freedom to move or another place to go, it's the worst of all worlds.

It can't be the lack of cement, given the fact that Cuba exports cement.
