Did you know...

...that 62 of Wyoming's population of 492,534 are Cubans?

Yep. Says so right here in this brand spanking new Fact Sheet on Cubans in the United States from the Pew Hispanic Center.

no Cubans in Arkansas or South Dakota however. Perfect location for setting up a Cuban Cafeteria....

Find it interesting there were no Cubans listed in Arkansas, in 2004...perhaps none wanted to inhale...

Alabao, asta en Alaska hay Cubanos! We are everywhere. I bet you even those 62 Cubans in Delaware are playing dominoes and drinking coffee as we speak.

I'm more surprised that Wyoming has a population of 492,534 than I am that 62 of them are Cubans.

I think I met the entire Cuban population of Delaware last week!

I'm pretty sure I can connect myself in a step or two to at least a handful of those 62 Wyoming Cubans. A friend of mine from high school had lots of crazy stories about visiting her cousins who lived there.

Wyoming is a great place. Beautiful vistas. I wouldn't mind living there a few months of the year...

I spent a year in Wyoming, it is beautiful country, full of stark contrasts.

How interesting... specially the part about Cuban seniors having higher poverty levels than all other hispanics and whites- ...

...gotta stop spending money on cerveza people!!!!

This study explains why we are hated by so many envious Latin Americans. It's something I have always known.

Please lets get out of the habit of using the terms "Hispanic" and "whites" together. There is no such thing as a "Hispanic" race.

As a pro lifer I was also disturbed about the positive attitude many Cubans have towards abortion. Castro has used abortion as a weapon bringing Cuba into one of the highest abortion rates in the world!

Posted by: mandingo [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 25, 2006 02:40 PM

Mandingo,

In 1999, six out of ten pregnancies in Cuba were aborted. But luckily, they still have that vaunted low infant mortality rate. I guess if you kill'em on purpose it doesnt count.

Posted by: Val Prieto [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 25, 2006 02:45 PM

Mandingo,

Most Cubans that were raised in the island grew up without religion. And in Cuba abortion is as common as catching a cold.

People in Cuba don't want to have kids.

I went to Casper Wyoming a while back to go antelope hunting. A whole group of ten cubans where at a restaurant. Imaginate el show de 10 cubanos hablando. A guy a couple of tables behind us got up and said "coño chico son cubans?" I think we meet the only cuban in Casper, Wyoming.

Mandingo,

for the basis of civil rights laws in the U.S. hispanic is considered a race.

In fact, under the civil rights act of 1866 which is codified at 42 USC section 1981, the following are deemed races/ancestry (as opposed to national origin) for the purpose of coverage:

African/Black
White
Hispanic
Arab
Jewish
Asian
Pacific/Islander
Hindu/India
Native American

Thus: You can be of Asian Ancestry (i.e. Chinese), and born in Cuba and your race is Asian and your national origin is Chinese.

Just some legal tidbits to further confuse you

Of course there's no such thing as a Hispanic race. Hispanic is at best an ambiguous ethnic category, which gringos and certain Raza elments find convenient to use.

From the Report:

Cubans are far more likely than other Hispanics to identify themselves as white when asked about their race. (...) The report said the findings suggest that Hispanics see race as a measure of belonging and whiteness” as a measure of inclusion, or perceived inclusion.

These people are suggesting we tend to identify ourselves as white because we *want* to be white, not because we actually *are* white. Ahmmm, errr, last time I checked I'm pretty damn "white".

And Nurian, I don't know where you get your info., but Cubans on the island are probably more religious today than they've ever been. From Santeria to the resurgence of the Protestant sects. You may be looking at the issue from a Catholic or pro-life perspective, but a lot of women on the island don't necessarily look at it from that perspective.

Yoan, you obviously find the word "gringos" convenient to use, as well. I reserve the right to get huffy until everyone refers to me as "Northern European American." Various other ethnic groups don't think twice about using white, gringo, etc., without any regard for the actual extraction of the fair skinned one they label.

There is no disrespect intended in the use of "Hispanic." Seeing the name Miguel Hernandez, I have no idea if the guy is from Cuba, Mexico, Spain, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, etc. etc. It's not necessarily accurate, but used as a term of convenience, just like "white".

Posted by: Nancy [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 26, 2006 04:27 PM

I used gringo to indicate national origin. Period.

I don't get "huffy" when someone calls me Hispanic. Frankly, I don't care what little box society or the government decides to put me in, as long as I'm protected equally under the law of the land, which is the case here in this great country.

I was merely pointing out the ambiguities of the term "Hispanic."
