You can have my ice cold beer...

Via El Confeti, Chavez bans beer in Venezuela:

Chavez's new No. 1 enemy? Beer Oct. 11, 2006. 08:37 AM ASSOCIATED PRESS

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela's president has a new public enemy: beer trucks.
President Hugo Chavez said Tuesday he is fed up with seeing beer trucks sell alcohol directly on the streets of poor neighbourhoods.

"It's the degeneration of society. It's one of the causes of public drunkenness in the slums," he said as he declared he was putting a ban on the beer runs.

"As of today, I want the National Guard to stop the beer trucks and take them to the nearest command post. No more trucks," he said in a televised speech.

Chavez was speaking before participants in a state program aimed at helping alcoholics, the homeless and street children. The crowd had cheered him enthusiastically earlier in his speech, but his beer decree was met with a lukewarm response and scattered applause.

Chavez assured his audience he was not banning the consumption of alcohol.

Well… There goes his vote from poor neighborhoods down the drain in December… He probably forgot that is mentor fidel created “las cervezeras” in Cuba back in the 70’s to keep the people happy with litter complains…

You don't want to go messing up the slums with drunks. You want to have nice, neat, orderly slums. The vomit might mess up the raw human sewage running down the gutter. Creates a bad impression.

"stop the beer trucks and take them to the nearest command post"?
Ah-huh.

Time to ask the obvious: Has Chavez converted to Islam?

You know, Caracas slums are among the most dangerous in América, where there are more deads than in any recent war, and the only vehicles which go there without any problem are those which distribute beer. They cannot be touch because that means stopping the beer flux, and that means death, at least for the one responsible of stopping the beer from coming home.

Ah!, I forgot!, in Chavez' rallies you always find a lot of free beer for his followers. Why the change of mind?

K-2,

Now this makes a lot of senses. He is stopping the truck from going into those poor neighborhoods so there is enough beer in his political rallies. Then, if the people from those slums want to get it they have to go to the rallies increasing his numbers. This is similar to what happen in Cuba. If the government set up one of acts. You have two choices; Get in the buss and go there, or loss the day pays and be pointed out by your coworkers for a very long time.

Sounds like he is trying to nationalize the beer industry too. I don't think the plan is to reduce alcohol consumption but to close the competition. Its a good way to force them to purchase the beer at the govt. stores.
