Tuesday Flu Open Thread

The Mrs and I are walking pharmacies. I've been battling a cold/flu for over a week and it was only a matter of time before I passed it on to my wife. Had the worse sore throat Ive ever had yesterday with a nasty nasty cough and a skull splitting headache. This morning, I woke up and my right eye was completely shut with some kind of eye goo. Nasty nasty puss looking stuff.

Obviously blogging from my part will be a bit on the slow side until I beat the shit out of this freaken bastard cold/flu.

Use this post as an open thread for any links to interesting posts, articles, editorials or cures for the common cold.

Val - si tu Mama puede, que te haga una sopa de pollo - toma bastante vitamina C y ponte vic paporu en el pecho. Y no te olvides de ponerle una velita a tu Santo ;-)

Beer is the treatment of choice for colds and flu. It doesn't cure it but if you take enough you don't care.

Vodkapundit recommended this stuff called Mucinex for coughs. Haven't used it myself, but he thought it was the bees knees. For your gooey eye, try some eyedrops called Similasan. It's a homeopathic pink eye reliever. (Walgreens in our area had it.) I had a nasty eye goob last winter, and the drops were really good. Just keep using it every couple hours throughout the day. Another thing about the eye goob, you have to wash your hands a lot and wipe everything you touch (doorknobs, computer, etc.) with a sanitizer to prevent spreading it to your other eye or to the Mrs.

Other than that, try to get some rest, and I hope you're both better soon!

If all else fails there is always Cuba's free and universal health care system - where 75 out of a hundred Cubans is a doctor and the cure for AIDS is not far off. Just joking!

Try Chicken soup - Cuban style with lots of noodles and viandas and that deep yellow color - a cure all!

Sounds like you have pink eye. If so, it is very contagious. Get well soon.

Saw this on Drudge: http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/16110727.htm

Tom Tancredo is a xenophobic, racist demogogue who trembles in his boots whenever he steps outside of the lilly-white Denver suburbs. Calling Miami a 3rd world country is egregious even for him. He brings up valid concerns in his immigration views, but appealing to the most base elements in this country exposes him as an ignorant racist.

You might have pink eye !! I just had it on both eyes and from what you say it sounds like you might have it too. It started on one eye and then to the other eye. You do get like a "mucus" substance that looks like eye boogers.

Val, the only thing for the goo in the eye is VICARIA (it comes in different colors, but use the white one, this is an old Cuban remedy). It's the only thing that works. It's a common flower, found in most yards in Miami, ask your mom or mother in law, they'll know what it is. Take the flower part and the little stem, boil in and inch and a half of water, when it begins to turn a little yellow, turn it off, cool and wash your eyes with a cotton swab dipped in the liquid every 15 minutes or so(of course, don't re-dip the cotton swat in the liquid after it's touched your eye). Within an hour and a half your eyes will be so MUCH BETTER. I didnt' believe this worked until I was in excruciating pain and the eye dr. say we would have to wait 24 hours to see if it actually was pink eye - whatever, any eye ailment, pink eye, irritaitn from make up, etc. Try it. I hope you and your mizzues feel better soon.

Val, me gusta tu muyer, she's been listening to all our "elders" and remembering what they say. Ask the neighbors, someone has some in their yard, and the other really good, absolutely fabulous remedy, for warts, is Itamo Real. I know this from 20 some odd years ago when I had a problem y una curandera se lo recomendio a mi mama. Just recently a friend's son who had over twenty warts on his hand, hey, don't ask what was going on with that hand, but really, he had procedures done by by drs. and nothing could be done. They came back, they never went away. We got him a plant to "sembrar" in the yard, every night, just take a leaf and the white milky substance on the stem, put it on the wart, be patient, do it every night. GUESS WHAT? After two months the kids hand is wartless! Yes, nuestros viejos have lots of things to teach us about natural remedies. Dear Lord, please, one of them have to write a book and leave us their wisdom before it dies out.

Vicaria and Itamo Real, we should all have them growing in our yards. Val, you know my e-mail address, I know you live in my area just from the descriptions I've read. E-mail me. I'll deliver a plant - or meet you at La Carretta.

Hope you're doing well.
