The article notes the gusanos have done pretty well for themselves - and their environment.

Actually, gusanos are one of nature's greatest and most underestimated creatures. Without them, the soil, the fauna and flora where they abound would not progress....... oh, but I digress.

Note the people cited in the article: Dario Moreno, Sergio Bendixen, and Carlos Saladrigas, none of whom are anti-Castro hardliners.
Bendixen, a Democratic Party activist, became the laughing stock of the Cuban exile community during the last presidential election, when he made last-minute public affirmations that Kerry had won Florida and Ohio.
Moreno heads the Cuban Research Institute at FIU, whose members are mostly pro-Castro activists like Lisandro Perez and Uva de Aragan.
Saladrigas is an active supporter of rapproachment with the Cuban dictatorship.
