Europe Steps Up - Sort of

EU member states have opted to extend the suspension of sanctions on Cuba after a bid led by Spain to fully normalize relations with the island. As you all know, the European sanctions were imposed on the Cuban government following the Black Spring of 2003, only to be suspended - although not repealed - two years later.

Britain, the Czech Republic and Sweden were among those nations voicing the opinion that normalization should not take place without democratic reforms on the island. Spain, of course, continues to press for normalization, in a bid to further develop business ties with the regime. Babalusians can read a more thorough account here.

All this endless dancing around something that couldn't be more clear or blatantly obvious! It's like a bad joke told over and over again. If it was so easy to condemn and ostracize the former South African regime, why is it like pulling teeth (impacted ones, at that) to do anything approaching that with the Cuban dictatorship? I know why, it's just frustrating as hell, that's all.
