The Guayabera Vote
America’s Mayor was in Mayami yesterday.
In the Republic of Hialeah, Land of Agua , Fango y Factoria ,The City of Progress, or simply the promised land for many a refugee from castrism, Rudy delivered his anti-castro message to the faithful in Florida’s most Republican city.:
''Castro is a murderer. I know it, I will never forget it,'' he said. ``So is his brother. I know it, I will never forget it.''
And Mr. Giuliani, who once excluded the bearded tyrant from a New York City diplomatic dinner, minced no words for castro and /or his fans and apologists:
“I find it particularly disturbing when American politicians and Hollywood people embrace Fidel Castro. I don’t know if they understand they are embracing a murderer, a dictator, a man who has been horrible to gays and lesbians, particularly focused on homosexuals,” he said during a brief session with reporters. “He had a whole campaign to basically, I would call it torture gays and lesbians. I don’t get it when the Hollywood people kind of embrace him.”
Campaigning for the Cuban vote is now euphemistically called “chasing the guayabera vote”
Actually coming to South Florida for Republican presidential candidates, is more about chasing the “guayabera bucks” than making promises. After his free speech in “La Carreta”, the Mayor then went on to attend at a $2,300 per person fundraiser.
Hopefully every $2,300 check had “Remove the Wet/Foot/Dry Foot Policy” on the memo line of the check.

I thought the Cuban American mayor of Hialeah was a democrat who a couple of years ago led a demo in defense of Theresa Kerry and her involment in the Tides Foundation and IGC the web portal for Cuba and Pastors for Peace amongst other communist pro Castro organizations. Remember?
Google Tides Foundation

Chasing the guayabera vote. That's a good one. I tend to be very cynical about these sort of pronouncements. It is blatant pandering. While I might agree with the sentiments expressed, I find that all the Republican presidents to date lose their anti-Castro zest once they get to power (and I am only counting actions, not words). As much as I like Rudy (and might even be inclined to vote for him for other reasons), his talk (and that of other American politicians) on Cuba is cheap. That's why I go against the grain and have registered as a Cuban-American Democrat. I caught on to the Republican lip service right away.
