A Woman the Estefans Might Want to Speak With

A5M1HR.jpg

After all the talk on yesterday's Babalu Radio Hour concerning the Gloria Estefan/Carlos Santana/Che debacle, I got to thinking. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could flood Estefan and Santana with a deluge of firsthand accounts of El Carnicero de La Cabaña? For my part, I'm re-hashing a recorded interview I had posted on Babalu way back in May. Titled "One Story Among Millions" It is one Cuban woman's tale of the murder of a loved one at the hands of Che and his cronies during the butcher's tenure at Havana's now-infamous La Cabana fortress. Do with this post what you will.

The Estefans may have meessed up. They may have messed up in a big way and done a terrible job of trying to fix (or cover up) the screw up...

That doesn't mean they are suddenly another ignorant enemy. They're well aware f who Che was and what he did. The goal here ought to be to urge them to level with us as members and friends of our community.

I would hate to see these people crucified because they lost sight of this thing for a time when they have done so much else to show a real suport of the cause.

Rather than "flood" them with stories that all-too-similar to ones their own families lived, why not flood them with letters asking them to really explain themselves to us as fellow freedom-loving Cubans instead of as CD consumers?

Watching and listening to the Estefan/Santana/che debate, what strikes me is that there is no mention of the other "freedom-loving Cubans," the other amazing Cuban exile artists who are also prominently featured in the video and the CD.

This collaboration is NOT just Gloria and Carlos.

Candido Camero, Paquito D'Rivera, Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros, ANDY GARCIA (yes, of The Lost City), Orestes Vilato, Cachao, Generoso Jimenez, Arturo Sandoval - those names are just the Cuban artists who play on this cd.

I won't throw the Estefans under the bus on this. I agree with elbombillo, that "That doesn't mean they are suddenly another ignorant enemy." They have always represented the CA community with dignity and are proud of their Cuban roots. So, they've made a bit of money here in the U.S.? Last I checked this is not only a free country, but a capitalist one. And isn't this what we all hope for our own Cuba someday?

I don't think any of these Cuban artists are ignorant of che's crimes against our people.

BTW, Anastasio, that was a beautifully written story.
