La Comelata

So, you got your botellita de champagne nice and chillin' in the fridge for the long awaited "celebratory" toast. But youre gonna need something to go with that, no?

How about un lechoncito?

Damn, but that looks good!

Those pictures are like ten years old, taken at a SuperBowl party at my old apartment.

Damn you Val! I'm sitting here in my cube salivating on my desk - staring at my tuna sandwhich hoping it will taste like lechon asado con much mojito. Mmmmmm

Posted by: Tati [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 17, 2007 01:42 PM

Even 10 year old lechon sounds really good right now. =D

Yeah! Pero que malo eres, right before Shabbat, man, you know I keep kosher. I'll have to settle for roast turkey with mojo criollo.

Roast turkey? Sacrilejio!

Posted by: Val Prieto [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 17, 2007 01:58 PM

I had to clean the saliva off my keyboard before I could write....that looks so GOOOOOODDDDDD!!!! I guess I better start shopping for the celebratory meal because I already have a great bottle of champagne chilled and ready to go. Marta any good suggestions from your great kitchen?

That's so barbaric!

I didn't put my caja china away after last noche buena, anticipating the need to use it for the massive celebration we thought was right around the corner. I'm glad I didn't put it away, since it looks like we're going to have our party very soon!

There's going to be a shortage of champaign and Cuban flags in the South Florida area, better stock up!

Dude, just watch it with your hand this time. Can you imagine the biggest end all, be all, blow out party of the millennium in Miami and you are all doped up in the emergency room?

Val,

Acabastes...

Jewbana,
Do you 'celebrate' Noche Buena? The Sephardic side of my moms family doubled up, Noche Buena cause of the Cuban custom and Chanukah for the religious significance. Nothing like a spinning dreidel banging into the dominoes.

That is awesome. I'm simultaneously freaking out and impressing my gringo co-workers.

Ditto on the turkey, I stuff it with moros and kosher sausage. It's good.

oño Val, whats wrong with you putting that lechon on web when its just about lunch time here?
In my block we gona have us a PARTY when the news is official. My Mexican neighbors are gona bring the frijoles, the Bros. are bringing chicken, The filipinos beer, the white folks wine and we gona make picadillo and of course breaK OUT THE CHAMPAGNE AND THE CHABLIS.

folks don't knock the bird as an alternate. I cooked turkeys on the grill after letting them sit in mojo and a rub and used hickory and a lot of wood chips to get that smokey flavor. I've never had a bird so good....the juiciest turkey ever cooked

Reminds me a lot of the famous pit-cooked pork BBQ in my homeland of Eastern NC...

Daniel;

Sorry I didn't answer yesterday. We have Shabbat dinner every Friday night and by the time I finish loading up the dishwasher after marathon gourmet cooking, I'm ready to pass out.
Because my husband is Sephardic and religious, we celebrate Chanukah at our home and everyone comes.
I make all the goodies and we exchange gifts. Noche Buena is at my brother's with the lechon, I make the moros and "THE MOJO". I bring a kosher meal for my husband and my son. BTW, my husband sits far away from the lechon. He can't stand the sight of it. But he loves the roast turkey with all the Cuban sides I make. Christmas brunch is at my sister's and she makes sure to accommodate the kosher folks. We celebrate all the holidays together. The non-Jews really look forward to celebrating the Jewish holidays. Passover is a huge one at my house. Ours was featured in the Miami Herald back in 1996. It was so cool to have the front page of the food section(and the back with a story and my recipes).
