Russian lawmakers to vote on restructuring Cuban debt

MOSCOW, September 7 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Cabinet has submitted an intergovernmental agreement for ratification to the lower house of parliament on restructuring Cuba's $166 million post-Soviet debt to Russia, the State Duma said Friday.

The Havana agreement on debt to Russia was signed on September 28, 2006. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov said at the time that the agreement envisages consolidating the debt and restructuring it over a period of ten years.

Cuba's debt to the Soviet Union, which is subject to separate discussions, is estimated at approximately $25 billion.

Something is definitely rotten in Denmark, or in this case Moscow and Havana.

Fools, or more likely, people going through the motions to make themselves look "effective." Even if the Cuban regime which incurred all these debts and is SOLELY responsible for them actually intended to TRY to pay them, it could not possibly do so. Cuba is ruined; it only stays afloat due to its two life-support units: Cubans abroad and sweet little Hugo and his yummy oil. But maybe the Russians just have a twisted sense of humor.

Gosh, I wish I'd taken out my mortgage from the Soviet Union! Imagine the economic freedom that comes from owing money to something that no longer existed (except in certain university faculty lounges).
