How about a bandaid for the ouch, Gloria?

Echate un poco de mercurocromo.

The Miami Herald reviews 90 Millas, Gloria and Emilio's latest, and you really need only read the first line:

With 90 Millas, Gloria Estefan returns to her Latin and Cuban roots, but she doesn't seem to know where they are anymore.

Ouch.

Despite my illinformed protestations, Babalu readers have been saying that here for quite some time. Read the rest of the review right here.

Oh, dear. Well, maybe it'll go over better in the strictly Latin arena. No doubt it will be just as expertly promoted as it was expertly manufactured. Still, Gloria's hardly a fresh new dish for the fickle public, and given the lack of distinctive, serious talent, she may be close to (or at) her expiration date.

I can't say I'm glad the album seems to be a flop (at least musically... I'm sure they'll still bank plenty). If anything, it's a huge let down and disappointment - I would say even bigger a let down than the fact that she had Santana on the album.

It's one thing to have a lapse in judgement and overlook a guitarists politics. It's quite another to be one of the exile's posterpeople, put out an album called 90 millas (inevitably getting us all anticipating some great homage to the motherland) and then have us ffind out that the album cover is about the most Cuba-related thing there.

If this had been the musically heartfelt, passionate, beautiful tribute to Cuba I was hoping for, I would have been all over it... Santana or no Santana. But if I keep reading reviews like this, I won't spend a dime on it.

Like my mother always said, "dime con quien andas..." The e$chefan$ decided to insult all freedom loving Cubans by supporting che-loving Carlos Santana and they totally blew off our objections. As far as I am concerned they don't deserve to profit from the suffering of Cubans no matter what the fuck they name their albums. Fuck both of them! Any questions on how I really feel?

I'm not surprised that the CD has nothing to do with Cuba. Gloria is only interested in selling CDs and she wants to steer clear of controvesy. If anybody thought that she was going to produce a CD with songs like Chirino's "Nuestro Dia esta Llegando" or Marisela Verena, "Son de las tres decadas," I got a bridge in NYC to sell you! First off, Gloria doesn't have the talent or heart to write that type of song, second she doesn't want to offend any potential buyer who might just not sympathesize with the idea of a free Cuba.

Like the reviewers says, the CD cover is the most Cuban thing about this CD and I'm sure that she did that in order to sucker sentimental Cuban Americans whom upon seeing the CD in a record store will in a knee-jerk reaction buy the CD expecting to her a Willie Chirino or Verena type of recording!

Gloria, though in the towel! You can't sing and you are prepackaged and manufactured, what's more, you have repeatedly let down the comunity that made you what you are today! Que verguenza!

Gloria Estefan: "No estoy con Bush, estoy contra la guerra"

I'll say it again:

Gloria Estefan is to Cuban music what Chef Boyardee is to Italian food!

will bashing or not bashing gloria will bring freedom to cuba?

no

We should concentrate in other areas. My personal opinion . thats all

I think the Estefans would have been better off to go one way or the other, instead of trying to have it both ways. Either do a real, serious tribute to Cuba and its music (which would obviously have ruled out Santana), or forget the Cuba angle and just do "Latin" pop. It now seems that the CD title and cover are basically misleading, which does not look at all good.
