AP Reports New Castro Video
The Associated Press' Will Weissert is reporting that a new video featuring Cuban dictator Fidel Castro has been aired on state television. At the moment, I have no way of verifying the veracity of the information in the report - as all signs point to Castro as having died in August. Babalusians can view the report here.
The report is highly suspect, as insiders within the Castro clan had reported back in August, that the ailing dictator had been suffering from a fatal septicemia. I'll be in touch with various contacts inside the island throughout the evening and will post whatever inforation I am able to obtain.
UPDATE 8:38 p.m. EST
Just got off the phone with sources in Havana who verify the video's broadcast and spoke of a great deal of confusion regarding how this is possible. After having watched segments of the video, it appears Castro is speaking from the same hospital room beneath the Consejo de Estado where he has allegeldy been all along. That's all I've got folks.

Septicemia leading to Septic shock doesn't necessarily kill a person. The death rate is 50-60%
I know a little about this subject. For I was hospitalized for blood poisoning in 2001. In 2003 my newborn son Daniel died as a result of sepsis barely a half day after he was born.

I work as a TV producer here in miami, and I saw the whole thing via satellite from Cuba.
He mentions Alan Greenspan's book, how the dollar closed yesterday, and other timely things.
It is real, and he is still alive.
Bummer.

What do we do with the CUC? Convert par to EUROS?, LOONIES?. Oh and what do we do to the regular Peso lo que no vale nada! -S-

The Dead Collector: Bring out yer dead.
[a man puts a body on the cart]
Large Man with Dead Body: Here’s one.
The Dead Collector: That’ll be ninepence.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn’t: I’m not dead.
The Dead Collector: What?
Large Man with Dead Body: Nothing. There’s your ninepence.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn’t: I’m not dead.
The Dead Collector: ‘Ere, he says he’s not dead.
Large Man with Dead Body: Yes he is.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn’t: I’m not.
The Dead Collector: He isn’t.
Large Man with Dead Body: Well, he will be soon, he’s very ill.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn’t: I’m getting better.
Large Man with Dead Body: No you’re not, you’ll be stone dead in a moment.
The Dead Collector: Well, I can’t take him like that. It’s against regulations.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn’t: I don’t want to go on the cart.
Large Man with Dead Body: Oh, don’t be such a baby.
The Dead Collector: I can’t take him.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn’t: I feel fine.
Large Man with Dead Body: Oh, do me a favor.
The Dead Collector: I can’t.
Large Man with Dead Body: Well, can you hang around for a couple of minutes? He won’t be long.
The Dead Collector: I promised I’d be at the Robinsons’. They’ve lost nine today.
Large Man with Dead Body: Well, when’s your next round?
The Dead Collector: Thursday.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn’t: I think I’ll go for a walk.
Large Man with Dead Body: You’re not fooling anyone, you know. Isn’t there anything you could do?
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn’t: I feel happy. I feel happy.
[the Dead Collector glances up and down the street furtively, then silences the Body with his a whack of his club]
Large Man with Dead Body: Ah, thank you very much.
The Dead Collector: Not at all. See you on Thursday.
Large Man with Dead Body: Right.

Val,
If this is a legit and current video, I think you owe your readers an apology.
You said "Fidel is dead". You can't just make that statement in your position and not expect to be held accountable.
Perez Hilton (a Cuban American) will need to apologize to his readers as well.
Also Peter Perez a regular poster on Cubamania.com (but banned from my site permanently) will need to apologize for making the claim without the proof.
If you want to state the fact that Fidel is dead, you need to confirm your sources or apologize when they do not tell you the truth.

Oscar Haza (Channel 41 Miami) showed a small segment of the video with clown Randy Alonso holding Greenspan's latest book. Haza has also been consistent in denying the rumors that fidel is dead (he made a statement to that effect last night).
Looks like Haza is right.

Indeed, it appears the video is genuine and that yet again, we have fallen victim to the machinations of the regime. For months, we've been getting spoondful tidbits from inside the island, all pointing to the fact that Fidel was dead. It would now appear that those tidbits were nothing less than a misinformation campaign from inside the island.

The motherfucker is alive and that's what is important not the fact that Val got a little bit enthusiastic when he thought fc was dead. Give the guy a break, this is a blog and there's some room for emotions, etc. In any case this is the place everyone visits when we think something is happening in Cuba.

I think it´s digital imaging. You can put anyones face on a body. If it was a tape and not live, I don´t buy it. If they want to show he´s alive, it´s the simplist thing in the world to do. Instead we get smoke and mirrors. I just don´t believe he´s alive.

Ziva, they can't go live with this guy. The video they show is probably heavily edited to show the less worse parts of his incoherente habladera de mierda. They also don't need to risk being caught doing fake stuff, they rather not show him and honestly, nothing happens.

I'd love to see the guy that has to spoon-feed current info to the Coma Andante:
"Comandante, el euro cerro ayer a 1.84"
"Que? Quiero sopa."
"No Comandante, el Euro, que cerro ayer a 1.84"
"Me orine."
"Comandante, Alan Greenspan escribio un libro, el trabajaba como--"
"Escuche compañero, me hice caca."
What a scene that must be. Trying to cram current events unto the brain of a walking cadaver.

Eduardo, I disagree. The regime needs fidel, I beleive they will do anything, including releasing fake photos and videos to at least create doubt that he is still with us. The MSM isn't going to question whether or not they are real, so it wouldn't matter if we could prove they are fake, no one would listen. And they could roll him out in a wheel chair, prop him up in an auto where people could see him. He wouldn't have to talk or do anything. All they need to do is produce a breathing body, and they can't.

This reminds me of the song from Blue Oyster Cult, Joan Crawford has Risen from the Dead. One thing is for sure, he couldn't possibly have sold his soul to the devil for one more shot at life, the devil already owned it a long time ago, leaving fifo with nothing to bargain with.

Hey, little kids, how about doing something meaningful to help our brothers and sisters in Cuba instead of all this silly speculation. How do they say it in Cuban? Stop eating shit. Nothing personal, just a right on Cuban expression.

If you look at this video which came out in April
http://youtube.com/watch?v=94-n5zM8W5Q
and compare it to the new one you'll see that castro looks much worse in the new one. This contradicts the media report that says he looks stronger. He doesn't. Also nothing he is saying makes any sense. And at one point you see him looking up towards the camera as if for approval of an unseen person who is directing him.
As I said all along, this guy is swinging on the pendulum between life and death. They are trying to keep him going with surgeries and respirators etc.
If this is the way he looks now, imagine how he looked a couple of weeks ago when he was probably connected to machines with tubes etc.
Hopefully he's suffering.

Hey Mamey, and what exacly are YOU doing to help?
For your info... Blogging is only ONE of the things we do. You don't know US or what WE do to "help our Cuban brothers and sisters in Cuba" as you put it.
On another note...
The video only shows -what we've known all along-that the Cuban government is crumbling and desperate. They needed to show the living dead coma andante to keep the fidelistas in line. Why else would raulita NOW have his own son and grandson responsible for his security detail? Because he can't trust anyone else...
There are rumors in Cuba that the coma andante had surgery a few months ago (septicemia?) and he needs to have another surgery soon. Ergo, his appearance now. Don't expect to see him any time soon.
There are also rumors that raulita has been very ill. I hope so. Maybe he'll go before fifo. That'll really be something.

Henry -- I agree with you. There is a marked deterioration between the April video and now. In another six months, he's gone for good. Fidel Castro is definitively not going to be publicly celebrating the revolutionary anniversaries of Dec 2 and Jan. 1. I agree with delacova that Castro looks like he has Alzheimers.

People, I'll watch the video of him when he's dead, I really don't give a shit about a video of him when he is still alive, who cares, he's just saying the same old shit, what else is new? CNN sure made a big thing about it, don't you think? What happened to the Cuban people in Cuba, lets hear what they have to say, place some cameras on the streets and interview them. Fidel Castro is NOT Cuba, he's not even the Leader of the Cuban people. The Cuban people in Cuba and all the Cuban exiles around the world are completely forgotten by CNN in this bias story, who the hell do they think they are? He's going to improve the health care now? After 48 Years? Que Comemierdura! Jose

Tomas,
You can't say "There's a fire in the theater" and then pretend you never said it.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not out to get Val or criticize him but when anyone makes a huge statement to a community like "Fidel is dead" one should stand behind it.
Posted by: havanajournal
at September 22, 2007 07:55 AM
I'm pretty sure that if you read Val's posts and comments on the subject that you'll see that he never said fidel was dead. He reported things he had heard from a variety of sources and stated it as such. He has said that fidel was, in his opinion, dead. The problem here is that we have to rely on the word of an opaque and dishonest regime that is not beyond manipulation and misinformation.

Lets give it a break. Who cares if he is REALLY dead. We won't know until THEY choose to reveal it. So why play into their hands? The main issue in Cuba is their freedom. Whether they prop up a dead body or if castro is truly recovering makes for good novela, but really hasn't changed squat in Cuba. Lets fight the good fight against the commies in Cuba and not each other.

So Val helped force the Cuban government to show Castro at one of his "better moments" and that was not too hot.
The real question is who is in charge of Cuba now.
One might guess that Raul is out, for there have been no public executions....
