Oscar Elias Biscet honored with Presidential Medal of Freedom
The White House today announced the names of the eight recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Number two on the list was Cuba's very own Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet. As most of you already know, Biscet is one of the island's more prominent and outspoken human rights advocates. Currently serving a 25-year prison term for exercising his God-given right to freedom of speech, Biscet will of course be a no-show at a White House awards ceremony scheduled for November 5th. Can't wait to see how the Castro mafia spins this one.
I think I speak for all of us when I send the good doctor heartfelt congratulations and wishes for a speedy release from prison.

Cuba Watcher -
I will stand very pleasantly corrected. I did not expect this until next year. Looks like GWB is getting serious about CUBA - AND - can understand why from a purely mercenary US interest point of view. A free and friendly CUBA can be a huge source of both petroleum and biomass energy. The offshore petroleum will be drilled for anyway, the biomass from sugarcane or similar sources will need lots of help to bring Cuban Agriculture back up to what it was in the 1950's, let alone what it should be. And, that help lies a mere 90 miles away. This time, the good fortune to come might just help the Cuban People - not just the current kleptocratic regime. We live in interesting times to say the least. -S-

What good news! Dr. Bicet is a worthy recipient of such a high honor. Hopefully it won't be long before he will be able to accept it in person in a free and democratic Cuba.

What great news, shame on the MSM if they ignore this. Very deserved, as it would be for so many others suffering on the island gulag.

What a wonderful way to honor this great man, and what a bold and decent move by GWB.

The Prez is definitely hot on Cuba -- and without any discernable ulterior political motive. Can't wait to see what his next move is...

If there is a "next move" and it is as elegant, and appropriate as this one, I may have to start changing my mind about our lame duck President's approach.
May God keep and protect Dr. Biscet. Men like him are rare, and much needed.
