Alicia Alonso and Nora Desmond

When I first saw this photograph of communist Cuban ballerina Alicia Alonso, the first thing that popped into my head was Carol Burnett’s Nora Desmond character based on Norma Desmond from the movie Sunset Boulevard. Just like the original and Carol Burnett's comedic interpretation, Alicia is an old star whose brilliance has long since been extinguished. She still believes, though, that she can make a triumphant return to the limelight and once again be a star for her beloved revolution. Unfortunately for her, she sold her soul to a devil named castro. The light of the world may shine upon her again for a brief moment, but only to illuminate the evil regime she devoted her art to.

Enjoy your moment in the sun, Ms. Alonso, and remember: We’re not laughing with you, we’re laughing at you.

It is a shame. My mom always told me she has never seen a better swan lake than that of Alicia.

There is a faint resemblance, now that you mention it.

LOL :) Alberto!

As the "cubanism" goes ...

"Le mete miedo al susto"!

I believe that Alicia suffers a common ailment of many Cubans ... in certain professions ... whose "ego" keep them from seeing the truth or remaining blind and supporting directly or indirectly castro's Cuba... I have heard it from a few ... "En Cuba yo soy alguien ... aqui tan solo soy uno mas del monton" ... they support the system because they stand in a very different position than the regular "fulanito" ... they enjoy certain privileges and are part of the "elite".

I wish you well :) Melek

Needs a litte Botox from la yuma.

When I was little I used to hear about Alicia; she was a role model of sorts. Then my family found out she was in cahoots with the commies; that was the end of her for me. Sorry. I think divorcing the art from the politics is a myth. One of the elements of one's art is the influence of one's worldview.

Let her grovel with her handlers. Her time's short.

She was a great ballerina, a very long time ago. My mother still remembers with awe seeing her dance in Havana. When Castro took over, she was 38, which is not young for a dancer. If she'd gone into exile, her career wouldn't have lasted much longer, and her status would never have been what it was in Cuba. She opted to make a Faustian bargain: selling herself to the "revolution" in exchange for divahood for a lifetime, along with all the accompanying perks and privileges.

She has spent decades dancing to Castro's tune, literally and figuratively. Now, she's like a version of Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray," and it's not at all pretty (visually or otherwise). It is very sad, because she took a great, beautiful gift and put it at the service of evil. No one can deny her worth as a dancer, but she has completely disgraced herself as a human being.

Alicia Alonso is like her mentor, an egomaniac, who as others have said, sold her soul to the devil [fifo] in order to enjoy perpetual divahoodness in Cuba. What's more, Castro confisicated el Centro Gallego from Cuba's Galician community and gave it to Alicia for her ballet company. I heard that many ballerinas who have escaped Cuba say that one of the reasons that they escaped is because Alicia is suffocating. She doesn't want anyone to shine brighter than she does, so she holds back her dancers, stymies them and behaves like a tyrant towards them very much like her mentor behaves towards the Cuban people.

Actually, I think she looks more like the late Waylon Flowers' puppet, Madame. :)

Yes, she looks EXACTLY like that damn puppet, and all too sadly, a puppet is what she is and has been for decades. I doubt anybody takes her seriously, politically speaking, and it's pretty obvious she sold out and is simply holding up her end of the deal.

She was a "grand dame" (and lived like one) long before Castro, meaning she couldn't possibly claim to be a "woman of the people," not even remotely. This is a case of a kind of aristocrat who found a way to keep living like one in a "proletarian" society. Maybe it's been worth it to her, but the price she paid was mighty high.
