Is there a doctor in the gulag?

Yes, there is.

At least six, to be exact.

Laida Carro, whose e-mails demand attention, for the news they bring about Cuban political prisoners and other dissidents, has published at Misceláneas de Cuba a tribute to five physicians and one dentists, imprisoned since at least 2003, because of their beliefs and their opposition to the regime.

The best known, is Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet.

But there's also:

Dr. José Luis García Paneque.

Dr. Marcelo Cano.

Dr. Alfredo Pulido López.

Dr. Luis Milán Fernández.

And Dr. Ricardo Silva Gual.

Not surprisingly, but still ironically, the Cuban health care "miracle," has been not so much for these men.

"The inhumane conditions in prisons, and the cruel treatment that all Cuban prisoners have received from their jailers since 2003, have seriously deteriorated the health of these health professionals," Carro wrote.
