Timing is Everything

On Dec. 7 comes the announcement that more land is going to be released into private hands by the regime as part of Raul's "reforms." Is this intended to be the carrot to go along with the stick they have been wielding since Nov. 21? Anyway, the article from Reuters in Spanish is pretty much standard fare. It neglects to explain the mechanism in place to cede the land. Are they going to sell it to private individuals? Questionable. Give it away? Not likely. Anyway, it does include the obligatory quote from a "supporter of the revolution," who says that the American concern for which he and his father worked preRevolution worked them like slaves. Here's the money quote, though:

"Nuestras vidas son hoy mucho mejores, pero la verdad es que aquí se producían 1.000 litros de leche por día y hoy andan quizás por 200 litros," añadió.

"Our lives are much better today, but the truth is that we used to produce 1,000 liters of milk each day here, and now maybe 200 liters," he added.

It would seem that this is a version of the Ortega land and property grab of Ortega in Nicaragua. If this is correct the logical next step would be that then the Cuban Nomenclatura will try to stabilize its property "rights" in an open economy within a tightly controlled political system.
