Future Havana?
Architecture students at FIU have been working on a project to revitalize Havana.
It's simply a student project but that doesn't mean it can't be used by assholes as a slam on exiles. Take a look at what this jerkoff writes in the comments at herald.com:
This is a perfect example of how Cuban-Americans have this illusion that one day they will return to Havana and make everything the way they want it. This is the type of thing that makes Cubans on the island nervous about Americans and is not much different than the US-led control of Cuba before the Revolution. I'm sure the plans for the Casinos along the Malecon are already on the drafting table.
Never mind that the professor in charge of the student project says:
This will be an invaluable reference document, but we won't pretend to impose our vision on the architects and urban planners that will assume the revitalization of the that city
Besides, take a look at the models in that video. What would make Cubans so "nervous" about actually having new construction in their city? Is the crumbling city of Havana in 2007 so precious to them that they would not want projects to help revitalize the city? And again with the bullshit about casinos. You know what, I'm not opposed to casinos in Vegas, Miami, or any other city where the people want them. Casinos provide a lot of employment and draw a lot of tourists. fidel has saved generations of Cubans from the degradation of the one-armed bandit, meanwhile they are eating dirt. The commenter at herald.com can kiss my ass.

Well said Henry, there were what, 10 Casinos in Cuba bc, and contrary to fidels bullshit propaganda, the island was not over run with gamblers, whores, and gangsters. I am so sick of these assholes, and I'm not going to forget them when Cuba is free.

Nothing new regarding the comments section, Henry - 'tis a hotbed of racist, backwards-thinking redneck jerkoffs and as such - is to be ignored.

To hear them you would think there were no casinos, brothels, or criminals in 1950's United States!
The enduring power of propaganda my friends, joseph goebbels would be so proud of fidel's cuba!

Yeah, that's one thing that I really hate about the television programs that have focused on on
our community. Wiseguy, Miami Vice, & now Cane.
The idea of the elusive Cuban Mob; this is different from the Cuban Mafia; that's us reactionary republicans. Boliteros like Santos do exist the late Jose Battle comes to mind; or a character from which Scarface was inspired by; Alvarez Medardo Cruz, Alberto San Pedro; but they
are no where as ever present as television would have you believe. Where did the Cuban Mob come from; they apprenticed under Luciano, Lasky, Giancana, or Cotroni,Guerini,Francesi(the French
Corsican contingent). The first three were also the men behind Las Vegas, It's likely if the mob were to make their presence known in Cuba; it would by Italian, Russian, what have you.

The Miami Herald always leaves in the comments section of their articles when they contain racist anti-Cuban statements. Yet, as soon as articles about African Americans or Jews get racist comments, they quickly delete the corresponding comments section.
Here is one example. In today's Herald article about three African American robbers
http://www.miamiherald.com/top_stories/story/355847.html
I saw earlier racist comments. Now, the entire comments section for this article has been removed.

Here is another example of how the Miami Herald discriminates against Cubans. An article in today's Herald about two Latino robbers, who are not identified as Cubans, contains a comments section full of racist rantings against Cubans.
http://www.miamiherald.com/459/story/356200.html
Note how the article about African American robbers in today's Miami Herald had its comments section entirely deleted.

"a perfect example of how Cuban-Americans have this illusion "
God forbid someone should keep a building from collapsing or put a coat of paint up. One day Havana will be the jewel that it was and should be again. Next Christmas in Havana!

“This is a perfect example of how Cuban-Americans have this illusion that one day they will return to Havana and make everything the way they want it”
Let’s see…! Maybe the asshole that made the above statement should’ve elaborated on who he considers more suitable to reconstruct Cuba. The Spaniards? The Russians? The Canadians? The Mexicans? The French? The ones -that so far- haven’t given a rat’s ass for Cuba, its people or its architectural treasures?

You forgot the brothels - Havana can't be Havana without a brothel district and the prostitution schools subsidized by the Batista family in exile.
As a designer it's refreshing to see Havana done up in a modernist streak, and not that Post Modern vulgarity. I say, make Havana up in a neo Deco, Moderne (note the "e" moderne is different from Art Deco)and Mid Century Modern of its glorius past.
