Making a difference

There are many ways to make a difference in this world. There's the seemingly trivial every day thing like helping an elderly person cross a street or up some stairs. There's the donating of your hard earned cash to a charity or a relief effort after a catastrophe. There's wokring tirelessly to fight for other's human rights. In essence, even the smallest of selfless actions can make a world of difference to someone in need.

But just imagine what it would mean to adopt an infant with no family from a poor country with little or no hope for a future? To take in that child and love him or her like your own, make all the needed sacrifices to give that child a loving home and a future with much promise. It may not change the world, but it will certainly change that child's world.

A few weeks ago we posted a call for donations to help a couple with their adoption of child from China. All they're asking for is help with the airfare to China and while their travel date and scheduled adoption date is a little over a week away, they are still a little short on the cost of tickets.

Folks, let's help them make a difference. If you can spare a few bucks, please go here and drop them in the old donation tin. You wont get a tax deduction, but you will get something much much better: you get to know that youve done something good for total strangers, for nothing in return except, of course, making a world of difference to one child.

I also received a very nice thank you and a photo of the family. I decided this year that instead of getting myself a Christmas gift, I would donate the money I would have spent, and it felt wonderful! Best gift I could have given myself.

I don't think people who haven't adopted realize how much it costs parents who want to bring a child into their lives- just financial costs, not even mentioning the emotional investment. Foreign adoption- or even domestic- is costly. The agency fees and foreign attorney fees are one thing but then there's travel, lodging, embassy fees, doctor exams, giving gifts to the foreign foster families, sending clothing to your child before you bring him or her home, the list is endless. And that is all assuming there are no costly complications. The total can be staggering when all is said and done.
