The Gospel of Oppression
As Ruth reminds us in this post at Ninety Miles, the Vatican will be sending an entourage to Cuba to meet with raul castro.
Personally, given the Cuban Catholic church hierarchy's penchant for cowering to the regime, Im not sure I like the idea much, but Id like to hear what you all think.

More regime appeasement, more tourist euros for the castro regime; maybe some money directly for jineteros, etc....

My expectations are low for the visit. Perhaps I'm jaded. I'm sure the Vatican reps will give raul a nice lecture on the virtues of freedom, but the moment they leave, raul will go back to his usual ways.

The Catholic Church is one of several denominations in cahoots with the Communist government. Cuba loves the Catholic Church as they funnel large amounts of money through the government. One benefit in particular is that typically humanitarian aid from the Catholic Church in Cuba is given to the government for distribution (actually given to the government then the government sells it). So the Catholic Church in effect makes much money for the Cuban Government. Only a handful of religious groups get "benefits" that other groups that do not play up to the Cuban government. The main groups that sleep with the dictatorship are the Catholics, Southern Baptists, Mormons, Masons, etc. These groups have a "special" level of opportunities in Cuba that others do not have. All because these groups have financial arrangements with the Cuban government. While some of these groups should be classified as cults they all fall under religious groups to Cuba. They do make some strange bedfellows though.

I think that the Catholic church has the power to be a strong enemy of the Cuban government. Marx did state that religion is the opiate of the people. The priests were even expelled from the island in the early 1960's. I do however, believe that the Catholic church isn't doing everything in it's power to help the Cubans.
