First Candidate Statement on Cuba: Fred Thompson
We have just received the first official statement from presidential candidate for our new forum, Candidates on Cuba. Congratulations to Senator Fred Thompson for submitting his statement first. You can read Senator Thompson's statement on Cuba by clicking here.
We renew the call to the other candidates to have their campaigns submit statements.
The purpose of the forum is to serve as a clearing house for the official positions of the various presidential campaigns on the subject of Cuba. We are only going to post materials submitted by the campaigns specifically for this purpose.
We want to know where each candidate stands on things like the embargo, Helms-Burton, indictments for the castro brothers, travel restrictions, the political prisoners, human rights, the succession, etc. etc.
We have a space for each candidate:
Hillary Clinton on Cuba
John Edwards on Cuba
Rudy Giuliani on Cuba
Mike Huckabee on Cuba
Dennis Kucinich on Cuba
John McCain on Cuba
Barack Obama on Cuba
Ron Paul on Cuba
Mitt Romney on Cuba
Fred Thompson on Cuba
Campaigns with blank pages can contact us at candidatesoncuba@lycos.com.
Contact information for each candidate's campaign is available at Candidates on Cuba (or click one of the links above). Democrat or Republican, you should encourage your candidate to submit a statement and/or a video. Babalu is one of the most widely read web sites on the topic of Cuba, so the candidates will have chance to speak on the subject to an engaged audience.
As the Florida primary approaches this is unique opportunity for the candidates to speak up on one of the issues that is on the minds of hundreds of thousands of Cuban-American voters in the state.

how about canceling all food sales to cuba in violation of the embargo
how about enjuiciar a los hermanos castro por el derribo de las avionetas de Hermanos al Rescate
Estos politicos se quieren mojar pero sin quitarze los zapatos

None of the other Presidents who promised to liberate Cuba , have done squat for us.
Why should any of these do anything ?
Am Not voting based on any promises about Cuba, Basta Ya de estupideces.

AbajoFidel,
Those are great questions. Perhaps another candidate will see Thompson's statement and make a stronger one. Then maybe Thompson will give more specifics. See how that works?
Peter,
Getting the candidates on the record about an issue that's important to our readers is not a stupidity.

Here's a little something to piss us all off on a Monday morning:
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/01/14/cuba/
The coddled "terrorists" of South Florida
Anti-Castro Cuban exiles who have been linked to bombings and
assassinations are living free in Miami. Does the U.S. government have
a double standard when it comes to terror?

Same ol, Same ol....
How about a candidate with a plan and not just typical rhetoric. Sorry Henry, his statement is as hollow as those with no statement. Here let me save Fred and the others some breathe. Here goes..."Cuba will someday be free"....and I have another one "viva Cuba libre".....this should really get the espresso frothy.
Henry, in all seriousness. If you like him as a conservative and he is your man then that is great and I am happy for you. But please don't try and sell him as having a "better" position on Cuba. As far as Cuba goes its SRDC (Same Rhetoric Different Candidate). Have a candidate tell me what he will do differntly and how and with a commited timetable and then that may perk my ears, but until then its the every four year migration of presidential candidates to Florida. Drink espresso, say the right words, get the vote, and see ya in four years.

Oh yeah I forgot....and say something in Spanish with a real bad accent. That will really get the vote.

Pototo,
The forum is not intended to sell any candidate. I have my personal opinions which I post here at Babalu and my other blogs. The purpose of this post was not to hail Thompson's statement nor trash it, but simply to report that we had received and posted it.
You of course are entitled to your opinion. But my response to AbajoFidel was to explain that if you shoot every idea down before you even give it a chance then you get nowhere.
I remember his comment about 8 a las 8 and how it would serve as a test. I agreed with that. Same thing here.

Abajofidel-
With all due respect, you are simply not looking at political realities. While we may fantasize in private about an "invasion" of Cuba, it is neither politically feasible, nor would it necessarily be embraced by overwhelming numbers of people in Cuba. The time for the invasion was during the Bay of Pigs, and we lost our opportunity due to our lack of political will. Right now, our country is collectively tired of foreign interventions for the forseeable future. The best we can do at this juncture is what Senator Thompson advocates- we have starve the beast, and wait them out. Yes, it may not sound like much, and it is not immediately gratifying- we all want change NOW, not in years or decades. But that is the political reality we face- the best thing we can do now is not to strengthen the castroite hand.

Henry,
But I think the issue that does need to be discussed is that the announced position is no position at all. Starve him out? What another 49 years? This isn't against you Henry, but there is more that needs to be done. Something could be done regarding the Patriot Act that criminalizes and aid to Cuban Freedom Fighters. Ceasing "all" trade with Cuba and penalize those that choose to break the law. I quite honestly feel that if we will not have a true embargo then drop it. It is embarrassing to play games and say we do not trade with Cuba when we truly do. The only ones who do get penalized are those who wish to send aid to family members (even those who do not fall under family according to this administration). I am sick of waiting. There is more that can be done, but Fred and all the others are beholding the the ADM's of the world and all the campaign donors. This election has absolutely nothing to do with Cuba. Polictical conservative items perhaps, but by no means will there be any change regarding Cuba. If Cuba ever does become free I am sure that whatever president is sitting at the time will try to take the credit. So let us promote who tickles our fancy on a number of issues, but keep in mind that to date Cuba is not on th radar of any candidate.

This is not a fantasy of mine..What Iam saying is like pototo reminds us is that the US should not interfere with persons who are trying to do something about Cuba ..If they want to stage an invasion of their own let it be..None of the candidates have a real program to help end misery in Cuba. and it will remain that way because we ARE NOT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE o el ombligo del mundo..We are not

abajorfidel-
Who is suggesting that the US interfere with legitmate activities that promote change and democracy in the country? But we also have to remember that private individuals do not have the right to stage an "invasion" of Cuba, because private individuals are prohibited by law from conducting foreign policy, either by entering into treaties with othe countries, or by engaging in what amount to acts of war against Cuba.

...and thus, the Bay of Pigs was a betrayal on Kennedy's part. See the way I see it either you're in it to win it, or not at all.
Abajofidel,
who's to say that that's not a secretive plan in the works? You cannot just be straight forward about something like that lest you want to alert all of Cuba's allies and we risk another war. Remember the Cuban Missle Crisis? No doubt Iran will use nukes, or probably for all we know has nukes hidden in Venezuela etc etc (Which I'm confident the U.S. is prepared for.)
I'm for liberating Cuba by force, but truth be told. Small groups of freedom fighters (Alpha 66, Commandos F4, etc etc) alone are not gonna get the job done. Help from Blackwater comes to mind.

This administration (which I voted for) was asleep at the wheel regarding Latin America. we will indeed have another missile crisis. It has been reported months back of Iran offering "defensive" missiles to Venezuela and Cuba. The sore that is called Cuba has begun to fester and it is now affecting all of Latin America.
